Any encryption method employed by a camera to juggle that balance of speed, writing to a card, etc will easily be broken.

And I find this quote to be deplorable and egotistic. I don't consider them to be the most important customers, and certainly not important enough to tell where camera companies to spend their profits. These people will be in the very small minority that would use this feature, it would instead be used by those with less than honorable intentions.

“These camera companies make billions of dollars a year. They can more than afford to put extra effort into protecting some of their most important customers—ones who are trying to shine a light on corruption and make the world a better place.”

Other ideas:

Why not ask Sandisk to build a card that has the capabilities to encrypt the files as they are recorded?

Or instead, perhaps the camera just encrypts the files in the "down time" while it is isn't be used to record anything? At least that wouldn't affect the camera in the way I would use it, and would still encrypt the files, just not exactly at the time the file is being written.

Again, it would be those that are breaking laws that would make the most use of this, making law enforcement even more expensive and difficult. Could this be profitable long term? Perhaps. Is it worth the effort and future legal risk? Perhaps not.

My girlfriend already thinks my DSLRs are encrypted.

Cameras aren't the same as smartphones, which have internal memory storage where data is stored. Cameras store on removable storage media (compact flash and sd cards) and do not write to internal storage components.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

.
Rick, could you please explain what encrypted cameras are? I'e really rather not have to click out of POTN and have to go to another site just to see what this is all about.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
