Okay, so I've been wanting to do this for a while. Please note, this is my first review of anything, ever and most of it is very unscientific.

Thanks for sharing. Some nice shots to go with the writeup too.

Thanks for sharing. I've been debating upgrading my 6D to a 5D4 - like you I skipped the 5D3 altogether.

LucasCK, do you see a significant increase in IQ when you upgrade to 5D IV from the 6D? Is there a significant increase in high ISO and DR?

Yes there is a dramatic increase in ISO performance and dynamic range, however the best reason to upgrade is the better AF.. For example I did a wedding last weekend where the bride and groom were under a tree and the background was very sunny.. My 6d would have struggled big time with this situation however with the 5d4 all of my shots were in focus..

Also I was shooting a church wedding a couple of weeks back while using flash.. I could easily take the ISO up to 6400, allowing the flash to last longer with quicker recycling time.. This kind of thing is a game changer for me

yep, I've mentioned in other threads how pathetically basic the af is in the 6D compared to it's competitors but the fanboys kept claiming that the outer focus points are much better and more accurate than those in the orignal 5D and 5DII, some even dared to claim that they are almost as accurate as cross points...

I have now been using the 5d4 primarily for weddings with a 6d as backup. For the ceremony I attach my 70-200 to my 6d and it seriously feels like an old, outdated dinosaur, and the lack of touch screen really does my head in now after using the 5d4

You had problems with your 6d at 6400 ISO? I have never had a problem with the ISO performance but the AF is simply horrible...and that is coming from someone who loves my 6d.

I would rarely take the ISO over 1600 on my 6d, I know the 6d can produce useable shots at 6400, but as a wedding photographer I would try use other forms of lighting to keep ISO low such as flash, OFC and light sticks

Interestingly, your spelling is not correct either. Was that on purpose? ;)

I rarely take my 5D4 over ISO 25600, so I understand completely. :D

It's been a long time since I've lusted after a Canon body (lenses are another story though lol) but that 5DIV is special...your review isn't helping my GAS any either ;)

Nice review, format was great...wish others followed that. Photos were nice, but more would be better, like maybe a small gallery (additonal 5 or 6) showing off some low light or backlit stuff at the end. All in all, should be fairly helpful for potential buyers.

Now I scuttle off to think about whether or not it'd be financially responsible to have to systems in my kit

Update:

I have had 2 scary moments with the 5d4 so far

1st one - Second time using it, took out CF card with all the RAWS after shooting a wedding. Put it in my computer and started copying over to HDD. Half way through I got an error message and computer could no longer read CF card, nor the camera could read CF card. Freaked out. Thanked god I had the JPG's on the SD card. Put the CF card in my work computer and everything was fine. The card could then also be read on the 5d4. I'm pretty sure it was a bent pin in the computer

2nd one - Shooting a bridal party entrance into the reception. The camera says "error writing to card". I quickly run and grab my 6d to photo the bride and groom entrance. I cannot describe the panic I had within myself thinking all the images had been erased from the CF and SD card. Thankfully, only the bridal party entrance shots were not saved. Tried Card Recovery software, could not retrieve the bridal party entrance photos. I'm not sure what happened. The camera had been out in 44c degree heat all day, had not been turned off and pretty much took photos from 11am to 6pm. I figured it might have overheated, however I didn't think DSLR's could overheat

Don't think it is a camera thing but rather a card thing? If you think your computer had a bent pin, perhaps the card has an obstruction, causing bent pins.
