This was a fun and unique session for me and I'm always thrilled to shoot this wonderful model. Evelyn is not only beautiful and a natural before the camera, but she is also a talented singer and is working on producing her first album. Of course, she wanted some great shots for the cover, website, thumbnails, etc. and I was game (even though I had shut down business for the winter! Not hard to talk me into it.)

Evelyn and her mother always come prepared with ideas, hair and make-up, wardrobe, and specific ideas about what they want. In this case, she was going for moody and melancholy and we were hoping for weather to reflect that. Alas, we arrived on scene to a full sunny sky at mid-afternoon. I have to admit that I was a bit perplexed in how to work things (the pond they chose had a westward view -- terrible for that lighting) and there were few areas to work around that. They had a lot of confidence in me and were willing to accept whatever we could do to make it work -- and we did! Thankfully, the sun moves quickly in the fall here, and though the setting wasn't quite as dark and moody as we hoped, they are very pleased with how the sun played a part.

I have to put in a disclaimer as some of these are edited VERY differently than what I would normally do, in part, due to the light and desire for moodiness, but also for artistic purposes as requested by my clients. Still, I'm happy and proud to share! Feel free to ask me anything.

Nice job with the images. I quite like the feel, but I am not sure moody nor melancholy was what I got from it.

I'm curious how these were lit with such a strong back light. I think I am seeing a reflector, but it could just be open sky. How was it lit, and how did you go about finding spots and managing the lighting?

Number 4 is outstanding! I love the back lighting (rim light) in her hair. I too would like to know how and if you went about lighting these while the sun was behind you?

Thanks so much, everyone! We are very happy with these, but definitely not the moody shots she envisioned. Thankfully, they were willing to take whatever we could get (a one-day chance to do this, unfortunately.)

As for lighting, she is mostly back-lit, but there is a huge reservoir there, so I faced her toward that (and open sky) to light up her face and body. A natural reflector! I'd say that these were done around 2pm, so happy for that! :)

I love the backlighting on her hair. The first image is a little hot up in the opposite corner, draws my eye away from her, but still a very nice composition. Really nicely done.

A beautiful model, and lovely captures. All great, but #5 is stunning.

She reminds me of a girlfriend I dated fourty years ago.

These are great, Kristin! Yes they're different from what I've seen from you in the past, but think of it as growth. Bravo!

Thanks! Not seeing a blowout there on my histogram, but I'll look it over again. :)

A lot of people tell me that she looks like Anne Hathaway. :) Thanks so much for the nice comments!

Thanks, Graham -- definitely different. I doubt I'll move in this direction for most portraits as I like to be a clean editor, but it sure is fun to play once in awhile! But, yes, pushing the envelope also gives me courage to incorporate new things in the future. :)

Beautiful indeed. I like 2, 6, and 7. The other ones don't appeal to me as I perceive quite a bit of the 'fashion look' in them.
