I am thinking of taking a few days off in mid to late February to photograph bald eagles. My current thought is to fly to Chicago and go to somewhere on the Mississippi (possibly Le Claire Lock 14?)

Does anyone have any suggestions where the best opportunity would be?

This is an excellent area to see bald eagles (near Seattle).

Lock and dam 14 is good. Every lock and dam from there south to burlington, Iowa is good.

Another place to consider is Lawrence park in sterling/Rock falls. It's on the way to the Mississippi river from Chicago. There was a pretty active thread about that area a couple of years ago.

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought you were considering the Chicago area but wanted to know of other possibilities. I missed that you were looking for specific suggestions near Chicago!

Thanks - I should have expressed my question more clearly but appreciate your response. Maybe next year I will be able to get to the west coast!

What about in the Northeast? Would anyone happen to know any decent locations in the Rhode Island/Massachusetts area?

Thanks

I live in the Quad Cities area (Davenport/Rock Island) area which is 2-1/2 hours west of Chicago and on the Mississippi and Rock rivers. There are several hot spots to hit in this area. You mentioned L&D 14 in Le Claire, IA as a location. That is always a safe choice especially if you plan on using a longer lens. You can also check L&D 15 in Davenport. Another good location is on the Rock River in Milan, IL. Not usually the numbers in Milan as on the Mississippi but that also depends on the amount of ice cover on both rivers. I shot over in Milan the last couple of days. Only 12 eagles at my location but they were active for the 1-1/2 hours that I was there so that made the trip nice. If we get a hard freeze in February (your timeframe) then the Mississippi would be the better choice, but again that depends on how much ice cover we get. Good luck on your visit and be sure to post your shots!

When it comes closer to your time of your trip shoot me a PM or post here and I can try to give you an update on the conditions on the Mississippi and Rock rivers.

Conowingo dam. Maryland. USA.

Weird coincidence. Spent the christmas break in the DC area. My wife kindly agreed to drive back via Conowingo dam, and we were treated to an amazing aerial display. This was the first time that we saw the bald eagle in the wild.

Thanks so much for the tip.

They do put on a show there. Bald Eagles have made an amazing comeback. Keep your eyes peeled and I'm sure you'll see them in your area, maybe not til spring though.
