As I got out of my FIL's truck last night, my Canon 11-24mm lens fell out, hit the ground and rolled a bit. I gave it a quick once over and it looked like no damage was done, no noises coming from broken glass. The lens was in the pouch that comes with it, which is not very padded but at least a little bit of protection. I haven't used it since then, but just curious what else there is to do besides connect it to my camera, shoot some photos and look for issues. Anything in particular I should look for? My heart is aching. I have never in my life dropped a lens before. I need to get some better bags and protective cases.

I dropped my new 24-70. I understand your pain. Cost $250 to repair.

Mount it, test it thoroughly.

Probably going to be fine.

Ouch! Well, I certainly hope I'm not facing that, but it would be better than being totaled as this is a 3 grand lens.

My plan when I get a little time, thanks for the encouragement, I hope you are right.

I feel your pain. It hurts, but many times it's not a problem. L lenses are more solid than one might think.

My 135L rolled down a dining table right on the pavement while I was changing lenses. Clunk ! ... Not even one scratch, good as new.

My 85L fell out of the bag while I was running, and rolled on the street for 10 feet before stopping at the curb. It had the hood attached backwards, and the hood was the only thing that was lightly scratched.

That said, if no glass is broken and AF is ok, you should check for tilted elements. Focusing on a flat surface parallel to the sensor (easier said than done), each corner should be similarly sharp.

I'm very careful with my lenses but ended up having two instances where I dropped a lens.

One was laying my 5dm3 and 70-200 on top of a speaker. I walked away thinking it was ok. The bass from the speaker kept moving my camera closer and closer to the edge, until it dropped about 3-4 feet onto concrete. Everyone in the area gasped lol. Had to pay a good amount to fix both the camera and lens, but it was ok to have that peace of mind vs. going to a third-party spot to fix.

The second time, I had my 24-70 on the same camera. I either forgot to lock the lens in place or hit the release button by accident. As I swing the camera up to take a picture, the lens straight up drops off the camera and to the hardwood floor. Everyone gasps lol. I pick the lens up, inspect it, and put it back on the camera. No repairs needed.

Canon lenses are built like tanks!

hope you get it settled, dropped a lens once in my life, bag was sort of padded, lens very light. Turned out fine.

the 11-24 is a very expensive L lens, and the very expensive L lenses are built like tanks. You should be fine. I swear I can use my 70-200 to fend off intruders.

I dropped (and rolled) my 5DII + 17-40 out the back of the car catching the strap on something I was pulling out. 5DII had a bunch of scratches and a couple of dents, but both were fine.

Test it, if it seems fine it probably is.
