question about DPAF

For any of the new bodies with DPAF (Especially the 5DIV), when you use DPAF does that eliminate the need to have any MFA calibrations? If so, then when doing portraits would it make sense to always use live view focusing instead of the traditional method?

I don't know about on the 5DIV, but I've recently picked up an 80D. The LV AI-Servo function is fast enough to keep up with a moving target, within reason. It is my understanding that MFA has no effect on any type of LV AF. MFA is not needed in LV, and serves no purpose.

It is impossible to MFA LV. I have read LV is more consistent than PDAF even if you MFA. There is some AF variability in PD even if it does not jump out at you. However camera AF systems are getting better and I'm not an expert on this. I did have some articles and I will see if I can find them.

Here is a superb example of what microfocus adjustment accomplishes. After adjustment phase detection AF is now very accurate, although there still is going to be shot-to-shot variation. For the two or three of you who like to scream, “I don’t want to use microfocus adjustment! The lens should be perfect out of the box!“, we went ahead and put the same lens on a different body with no microadjustment.

That is from this article. Roger Cicala from LensRentals. I forgot to mention with LV you are focusing directly on the sensor while PD is redirected off the mirror so there are more variables.
