Trying to decide what new camera to get. Currently have a 40D and am in serious need of an upgrade.
Deciding between 80D vs. Eos M5. Although I've heard the Fuji XT-2 is an excellent camera, the cost of switching systems would run about $5K to get close to
equivalent lenses and I can't justify that cost. So the real choice is 80D vs. Eos M5. The main reason I want an M5 vs. 80D is size and portability.

Read a lot of reviews, and it seems like the only disadvantages of the M5 vs. 80D are: 1)weather sealing 2) 1/4000s vs. 1/8000s shutter speed and 3) lack of lenses (although
I have an adapter for EF and EFS lenses.

I have an M3, which is ok, but the big beef I had with it is the need to use the touch screen to change settings vs. having manual dials to do so easily.
Big questions are:

1) Does the M5 have manual controls to adjust aperture and shutter speed (while in manual mode) so that you don't have to scroll through the touch screen to do so. Reading the dpreview,
it appears that there are manual controls, but I can't tell for sure.

2) Is the image quality on the M5 equivalent to the 80D. (the sensor looks the same, so it should have same image quality and dynamic range, but the dpreview mentioned lower
image quality in low light and high iso)

Thanks in Advance.

I can see why portability is always a modern topic regarding gear acquisition.

If you were going through the hassles of lens adapters I'd buy a sony A7 series.

My reasoning for not buying an M5 is because the native lens selection is extremely lacking. My reason I even mention sony is because you can adapt Canon lenses as well as use native sony mounts both smaller Sony primes and "large" f/2.8 G master zooms. Adapting EF or EF-S glass to a M5 small body defeats the purpose of buying a small camera.

If you buy an 80D you have a very small dslr with excellent hand grip and directly mount EF and EF-S glass. You can change settings just like your 40D but also use some of the touch screen options too.

I've used a Panasonic Gh3 Micro 4/3 body as a video rig setup. I dumped all of my M43 gear and simply purchased the 80D to replace it. The 80D is slightly larger than the GH3 and it navigates just like the simple panasonic. Best thing I've ever done!!!

The 80D image quality is a HUGE jump !!! compared to your 40D. The 80D is the first Canon crop sensor body I've purchased in many years. I'm so pleased with what Canon has finally done with their crop sensor!

If by chance the M5 physically small native glass suites your needs then adapting EF/EF-S lenses may possibly be a good solution.

If I had a choice between a Fuji X-T2 w/ 18-55 (1899usd) kit lens or Canon 80D with 17-55IS (1900usd combo) I would take the Fuji. The fuji colours and look is really something I enjoy and feel that fuji has better IQ over canon crop sensors.

My issues with Canon is that it does not have a 24mm equivalent prime lens. Fuji has a 16mm f/1.4 (24mm equiv) glass.

The 80D is relatively a small package and smaller than your 40d. Adding a lens adapter with an M5 makes an unbalanced combination in weight. I'd rather have a larger body with native glass.

After all this babble...... I really like my 80D alot!!

you say it would cost you 5K to switch systems, are you heavily invested in lenses already? and what do you typically shoot?

for me it's really not much of a contest...the M5 although smaller with limited lens selection, and using EF-adapters it's not that small...it's not like it can fit into a pocket or anything...

i'd go 80D

I ended up buying an 80D. Gonna try it out (Ive got 90 days to return it if I don't like it). I mainly shoot landscapes, but also use the camera to take pics of my kids.

Looking at the selection of EF-M lenses I think you've made a wise choice in going with the 80D.
I couldn't imagine using a small camera body with such an incomplete native lens selection.

I set my C1 dial to preset to 24P video and dial C2 for 60fps.

I'm just curious what you would have needed to buy for 5K for a fuji setup???????????????

I got the $5K figure by looking at the lenses I would need to purchase to imitate my current line-up of canon lenses. I included the $1600 for the XT-2 body in that figure also. I figure I'd have to get a telephoto, wide angle, and a walk around with an aperture of at least F2.8.

Just like Canon, don't look at Fuji full prices. Nobody I know pays $2300+ for 70-200mm f2.8 IS II. Same with Fuji, wait for the sales, 23mm f1.4 $650 now. 90mm f2 is $750, same with 56mm f1.2 $750.

Fuji XT-1, 18-55mm
Sony A7rIV, , Tamron 28-200mm, Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art FE, Sony 85mm f1.8 FE, Sigma 105mm f1.4 Art FE
Fuji GFX50s, 23mm f4, 32-64mm, 45mm f2.8, 110mm f2, 120mm f4 macro

Man those are cheap!!!! In Canada you can't even buy lenses used for those $$$ figures :(

X-T2 is $1950 CDN, 23 f/1.4 is on sale for $850, 16mm f/1.4 is $999, 56mm is $999.

canon 70-200 f2/8 IS mk2 is CHEAP for $2200 on sale LOL!!!

Cheaper hobby/profession to purchase gear in the US :P

OEIJUR, if you buy a kit lens it'll suite a high percentage of photographic opportunities. For reasonable price you can buy a 23mm f/2 walk around, 35 f/1.4 or f/2 for street, 55-200 f/3.5-4.8. This can cover a huge range of photography. You can spend more but it all depends on how hardcore and demanding you are.

In time I want a kit that looks like this:

16mm, 23 f/2 (for size and don't care much for the FL), 35 f/1.4 (dislike the FL but sometimes necessary and it's a cheap lens), 56 f/1.2, 10-24, 16-55 and 50-140, 55-200 (for more range with amazing iq and not portrait application)

If I had an X-T2 (and current 16mp body) I can cover an an event if I get around to buying a couple new hss fuji flash units.

However with a heavier 80D I know it'd be easy to use it for events photography with your current glass (making an assumption it suites your current style of photography.)

I'd imagine the average income in the US is similar to Canada.

After the exchange rate the price is "cheaper" in canada. The 5dmk4 is a "cheap" $3500 USD while it's $4500 CDN in Canada. Quite a substantial hit on the wallet......

A while back when the prices in Canada were similar to the US (stronger CDN a while back) the Canadian Camera retailers were busier with US photographers/hobbyist crossing the border to score cheaper prices in Canada.

Could you imagine being a Canadian paying $2500CDN for a Micro 4/3 olympus E-m1 mk2!!!! I think there will be a steep drop in M43 followers due to that price!! The Fuji X-T2 would be a beast of a camera vs smaller less capable M43 sensor in the new E-M1mk2.

OEIJUR, I think you should consider the great sale prices to be had. 80D you can shoot straight out of the gates with your current lenses. Fuji is a different platform for a different experience and different looking files.

Experiment :)
