For over a decade now, when I first got Photoshop CS, I've been using small, lower-end Wacom pen tablets for Photoshop editing. My requirements have always been pretty simple--just more precise movements than I could make with a mouse.

Well, when I upgraded my big desktop (named Enzo Matrix) to Windows 10, there was no compatible driver for my last old Wacom tablet, so I need a replacement.

But the less expensive Wacoms are pretty expensive for what they provide, and the higher end ones are 'way more expensive than my needs dictate.

So I've been doing the unthinkable: Investigating non-Wacom tablets. Gasp. (You took a step back--I saw that.)

I bought a small $30 Huion tablet from Amazon that I've been using for a few days. The major disadvantage compared to a $90 dollar Wacom small tablet is that the pen has a lithium battery that needs to be recharged periodically. Otherwise, it has three programmable buttons (which the $90 Wacom doesn't have) and is working quite well for my simple requirements.

Glad to hear that there is another pen tablet that is more affordable and works as good as Wacom's. I'm still chugging along with my old Wacom Intuos 3 small. So far there's been no difference in it from back when I purchased it. I think I was running Win Vista at the time or possibly Win XP. Yes it would be nice to have a Cintiq, but to justify that I need to find someone to pay me $2 million for a photo of cucumber or carrot or some vegetable. ;)

I've been using pen tablets from Trust, a Dutch based company, although I'm sure all the products come from China. I've been using them for something like twenty years, I'm currently on my third one. Although Trust still exist they have stopped selling them. Also they only provide drivers for Windows, at least the W7 driver seems to work OK with Win 10.

I was browsing Amazon recently when I found a range of Chinses Cintiq clones, at very reasonable prices. IIRC the 27" IPS version was about £1000, instead of about £5000 for the Cintiq. If I hadn't just invested in a Dell 5K monitor I might have been interested.

I purchased a Huion 10 Pro a while back because it was during a horribly embarrassing dirt cheap promo and I could not resist. I also have an Intuos 4. I did VERY extensive research prior to the purchase of the Huion. The bottom line was this: The Huion 10 Pro competes on-par with the Wacom Intuos, but when you roll the price into the equation, the Huion is a much better buy.

I personally believe Wacom is currently operating in Extortion Mode. As the Huion's continue getting good reviews, continue selling, and cut into the Wacom profits, I believe this will force Wacom to consider operating in the Reasonable Price mode.

I was always a little apprehensive about buying a Wacom without knowing if I would like it. It looks like the Huion tablets are a great deal, especially for someone like myself that doesn't know if I would like using it/use it that much.

Thanks for the tip! Looks as if Huion makes quite a range of tablets; definitely worth checking out.

If you've never used a tablet before, I highly recommend them. I do a lot of digital painting and drawing so a tablet is a must for me. I've been using Wacom tablets well over a decade now and can't see myself without one. Using a regular mouse for photo editing is now foreign to me. The amount of finesse and detail available is hands down a winner over a mouse. Specially when using the brush tool in Photoshop or Lightroom.

Recently I purchased a Ugee tablet display (Huion has a similar version) but have yet to put it through its paces. There's a driver compatibility issue with my installed Wacom tablet. As I'm looking on getting a new computer dedicated to the monitor I'll just say that from what little use I've had of this screen it's definitely a great buy. Specially compared to the overpriced Wacom Cintiq displays.

Do the pen tablets integrate easily with MAcs? I assume they come with the driver software?

The Huion tablets come with Mac drivers on disc, and the Huion website also has downloadable drivers.

Following. Have been thinking about investing in a tablet for Lightroom use only. Started with Intuos Pro small, then decided Intuos Photo, now I'll check Huion out.

Check reviews. Google this phrase:

huion vs. wacom

Perceptions and comments will be varied, but mostly positive about the Huion. Many equate Huion basically on-par with the Wacom, but when the substantially lower price is rolled into the equation, they classify the Huion as a much better buy.

I don't really know how well the Huion works as a drawing/painting tablet compared to Wacom--and that's where critical differences are most likely to be revealed.

But photo editing is pretty lightweight in its requirements. It's kind of like evaluating video cards and understanding the difference between the needs of Photoshop compared to the needs of gaming.

For instance, instant and smooth response to pressure variance and pen angle are critical for painting, but there's not so much of that in photo editing--not a lot of us making big swooping movements from the elbow or shoulder.

After my earlier post I did check out the line of Huion tablets on Amazon and decided to put the model 680S on my wish list. Then a few days ago I got an email from Amazon saying that it would be 20% off in an upcoming flash sale. A couple of hours later it was marked down from $40 to $32 so I jumped on it. I installed it this afternoon and gave it a quick test with PSCC and it works perfectly. I think I'm going to be very happy with it, so thanks so much for the suggestion!

I had a Wacom Bamboo several years ago but never was able to get fully comfortable with it. However, every PS tutorial I watch on YouTube makes use of a tablet, so there must be benefits and I figured I should give it another try. Spending $80+ was holding me back, but $32 was a no-brainer.

:-)

LOL. Another brilliant person who knows how to use Amazon. Yep, put things on your wishlist. Better yet, put them in a cart but don't complete the purchase. Doesn't work every time, but when it does... I think Amazon has an algorithm that looks for stuff on lists and in carts.

I did the same with the Huion HC610 Pro and got it for $57. Certainly a lot better than $290 for an equal but smaller Wacom and $380 for an equal but little larger Wacom !

Excellent tablet and a best buy. Works well and competes with Wacom products for both photo editing and art from scratch.
