Can 11-14 years old Canon DSLR (1ds mark ii, 1d mark ii) still work well?

Hi, 1Ds II owner here (and 1D III):

I have a B&W question. Is there a way or option to an in-camera preview of intended B&W pictures (so with use of , say, yellow or orange filters as opposed to using the ' filter' -options in f.i. DPP).

My 5D and 50D have the sc monochrome picture option, but cannot find such a thing on my 1Ds II.

So far my 1Ds II only shows colour pre-views with the yellow or orange casts, but no way to predict how this pans out in post processing.

Thanks for any input or tips, perhaps I'm missing a simple step or camera option .

man i have no ideas about this, I only use raw file

The 1ds2 skin tone is really good, much better than those recent cameras that I have been using up to date
Except the weight and iso
Otherwise, it still works like a champ

I have owned 4 Canon cameras, wouldn't have anything else. I now have a 1D Mk IV and a 1Ds Mk ii. I bought them used off Ebay more than 10 years ago and they still have low clicks and work perfectly. But it's like anything else, you get what you pay for and I shop Ebay cause it's extra protection for free, if an item is not EXACTLY as described by the seller, it's covered. It seems to scare off the junk dealers. LOL

As I read your post, I couldn't help but to think, "if he has had them for 10 years and they still have low clicks, then he hasn't used them much."

So, that makes me wonder, if you don't use these two cameras much, then what cameras are you using for most of your shooting? . And why did you buy these cameras if you didn't plan on using them much?

I don't mean those questions to challenge you or to second-guess you on your purchases, just asking out of genuine curiosity.

Dear Board,

If they can't work well, I've wasted every dollar I've ever spent on DSLR's.

My 1DX is almost old enough to vote, and it works fantastic.

I've owned Canon DSLR's since 2007 when I bought a used 20D privately. Since then, I've bought and sold many more, all at a fraction of what I would have paid for most of them new.

I'm happy with 18mpeg, other people may not be.

I had other Canon 1d's before getting these. "Why buy these?" Ever had more money than you needed? And now I am 76 and just do not get out like I use to.

I'm only 60 and feel ya. Some weekends I look outside and think "80 minutes standing in freezing sleet to shoot someone else's kid, I must be mad".
But once I'm out there, that doubt disappears and the ge takes over. I am however thinking of losing the 400 f2.8 and getting something lighter.

I used a Canon 1DS Mark II for commercial/model work and they were great! Fast focusing, built like a tank and the best part...the beautiful images that it produced, especially the skin tones.

I actually just brought another one! There's something about the images that it produces, they're fantastic even compared to newest and greatest out there to buy.

If there's a problem they still can be repaired but not by Canon but by independent repair shops. Just buy some good batteries for the camera. They don't have to be Canon but a good company.

Anything over 1600 ASA and they're noisy but a good noise reduction software will help a lot.

Just my 2 cents!

No. . I can not even remotely relate to that.

I don't see any reason a 1D Mark II wouldn't be a really nice body to have if you could find one in good working order. It was my first "Pro" body and I really enjoyed using it. It was built like a tank and I've come to personally like the "feel" of the large format "Pro" bodies. I sold it and grabbed a 1Ds Mark III about 7 years ago and, for me, it was a worthwhile upgrade because, among other things, the controls on it better matched the back-up camera I was using at the time. I did recently buy a 1DX Mark II when the price literally dropped by half awhile back, and the high ISO performance is just ridiculous! I still have the 1DS Mark III as a back-up, it's been a great camera, and considering it was released in 2007, it's been a good investment.

I think, as previously stated, the biggest issues come when the camera needs repair, or the battery charger and batteries fail, although in the case of the 1Ds Mark III, I was able to find aftermarket batteries & charger relatively easily. Not sure about availability for the 1D Mark II

It's really easy to find all of this stuff used on ebay. . And yes, it all still works great even though it is very old and heavily used (even the batteries themselves).

I don't have a 1D series camera but my 7D (which is about 12ish years old) is still a workhorse camera for me.
