How many of you back up while on location, and if so, which method do you prefer?

I'm doing a location wedding in a few months and considering backing up during the day. I don't think cloud will be an option but I do have a laptop which I could backup to, failing that I was considering one of those SD card backup devices. Are they worth it?

What do you mean by location wedding?

I never backup at a wedding itself... I'm kinda busy shooting it.

I backup afterwards either when I get home or to wherever I am staying that night.

If at home files copied on to mirrored drive on computer plus two inital copies of external drives. One a to hand copy and another to the onsite fire safe. Within a day or so another copy goes on an external and goes offsite.

If away from home a copy goes on laptop and one external that night (as well as having the copies on the cards). As soon as I get home the normal backup routine occurs. Incidentally I wouldn't backup that night away from home if it wasn't for the fact I sneak peek that night too. If I wasn't sneak peeking and was going to be home the next day a backup would be needless as I'd backup as soon as I got home.

By location I mean that at the end of the night I will be returning to a hotel, rather than home due to distance :-)

We backup when you return home or to our hotel for the evening. We shoot with two cameras and change cards throughout the day so even if one card goes missing or goes bad we can still deliver for the entire day.

I have a portable hard drive for backing up photos. I only used it once. It was slow.

Even when I shoot weddings in Mexico I just depend on the duel cards in my cameras for backup.

I use NexTo DI and I love it. It's convenient and easy to carry around.

I NEVER back up until I get home. I carry 3 cameras.

I use bodies that are all Dual cards so each card is 32GB and both record at same time. Only way I will loose data is if I get shot and they steal my cameras from me. And even then, they better get the drop because I frequently carry CCW.

I get home and Download, all cards are set aside until edits are done ( next 2 days ) and all edits are on back up drives in 3 spots.

This works for me. Its what I do for every wedding and I have not lost a file in 11 yrs shooting as a pro and 400 weddings.

Your routine may vary. But my suggestion is to not take out cards from camera until you are home and ready to download......You stand a far greater chance of loosing a card then you ever will loosing data if you take the cards out of the slots.......DONT DO IT

Shoot dual cards on 32 gb cards, record to both cards at same time, dont take cards out until you are ready to DL to your editing machine, dont wipe cards until you are 100% backed up-----This is how I do it.

Hope this helps
