Need an upgrade......

Got a 7D now and I use my computer for plenty of other tasks. eBay, Documents, Photo editing(Lightroom & Photoshop), etc.

May even try editing video from the 7D.

Currently have a Asus G73S. First Gen Core i7, SSD, GTX460M.

It just doesn't seem to have any pep anymore and runs VERY warm.

I've built a few PC's in the past, but not sure if a newer laptop would be worth it or not. Was thinking of trying a budget build. Maybe Under $700 including a monitor. Any suggestions? I haven't built one since a Q6600. Was actually faster than this laptop when I sold it.

Desktop or laptop?

Not 100% sure yet. Depending on the performance of the laptop, I may choose a laptop. But, if the same money can buy me a desktop that blows away the laptop, I'll go with that. Maybe just keep this laptop for other less demanding tasks.

Desktops are typically faster and cheaper than laptops. How much depends on the individual machines and the task. I wouldn't buy a laptop for photo and video processing. My workstation has a fast 8 core processor, two SSDs, a RAID array, another hard drive, and a decent video card internally, you can't do that with a laptop.

That 700 dollar budget is a bit low if you want a computer that is significantly faster than your current laptop

Oh I didn't know TB3 had that capability. I take it it is easy to get from the single TB3 stream to the Dual DP1.2 required of the only 5K monitor that is currently on the market? AFAIK the Dell UP2715K is the only device currently offering 5K, and that doesn't have TB3, only the dual DP1.2 ports. Not that I am considering one of these laptops, but since I have the monitor it would be nice to know what it might take to connect a laptop to it for 5K at 60 Hz.

At this point consider 7 dead for any new PCs going forward. I miss it and still have a device with it on 7 still that will stay 7 but just assume that any new device you buy is only 10 compatible. No reason to go backwards right now to find out the next version of LR/Capture1/Etc. you want is only 10 compatible and you have to upgrade then anyways. Just bite the bullet IMO.
