If you take a photo of a snowy owl showing its wings and/or tail spread wide, researchers can use them to age and sex the bird for research purposes. They'll need to know the lat/long location as well. If interested, check out ProjectSnowStorm's webpage. http://www.projectsnowstorm.org (external link)

Sadly my shots are of one perched on a utility pole, not with wings or tail spread. However I have submitted my finding to ebird. Doing so, I learned that I had to specify Snowy Owl, because due to my location, it is so rare that Snowy Owl was not one of the choices presented.

There's nothing wrong with a portrait. They just can't be used to help age and sex the bird. I think the bird I saw would have sat there all day if it weren't for the ignorant person who walked straight for it, flushing it. Fortunately, the bird didn't flush far. I submitted a few photos to ProjectSnowStorm. Don't know if they'll be useful. It's a good use for those "birds flying away" shots.

I submitted a fair number of photo's to Project Snowstorm during the their visit back in 2013-2014, I never heard a word from them. I will submit one or two of the current Snwoy Owl I've been able to photograph.

I submitted three photos the other day of, presumably, the same bird that you photographed. Maybe one of us will actually hear back from them.

The staff biologists at Chincoteague NWR said this is a first year female.
