Is it my imagination but is there a lot of Canon bashing?

Actually, none of this matters.

Who cares what other people complain about? Are you happy with your hardware? Can you turn out spectacular pictures with whatever brand you own? The answer, as illustrated here on this forum, would be yes.

Most everyone feels their equipment is better than what others have. Of course you do......that's why you bought it.

Go...shoot...enjoy. There are a hell of a lot of more important things to worry about than some mook bashing Canon, or Nikon, or whatever......

In a perfect world you would be absolutely correct. But in reality, people think their preferences are superior and are willing to fight over it. This is true of religion, politics, sports and even completely inconsequential things like camera gear. You say who cares, but clearly people do care, and as a result the endless nit picking and brand bashing will not stop.

Well ... that all depends on how you read the words, I think.

I don't want to put anybody down but the intensity and pure vitriol that met the launch of the 5Div was something that I found actually shocking. This was a camera that (as a 5Dii owner) I had been waiting on for a good long time. September/October 2016 and the trolls descended on it as if it were consummate evil made manifest in tungsten, black plastic, and glass.

I'm a two thirds competent (maybe ... on a good day) amateur and that wall of hostile noise was almost enough to turn my head. It slowed me down but it didn't stop me ... and how glad I am! The stuff that the trolls decided wasn't important enough to boil in the mix ... most especially the stunning AF and lowlight performance, and basic ease of use .... were (as I expected) exactly what I needed to keep up with an energetic coming-up-to two year old that I have somehow acquired far later in life than a more sensible (but more miserable???) person would ever have done so.

It's no use 'on par ... Cassidy' trying to paint me the same colour as the anti-Canon trolls, because I am not. I don't trash other people's stuff or their ambitions for the strange satisfaction that, I suppose, that must give.

I have nothing clever to add here, other than, gee whizz people sure do get worked up about unimportant things these days, (meanwhile in the real world... I'll type no more, you fill in the blanks)

5D4 was certainly an eye opener though. I have not been as completely happy with a camera since 2005. It is so much in one package. And I was reading all the bashing while deciding to upgrade. I am very glad i was able to wade through the BS and see the forest for the trees,.

I agree. People read, they listen. And they do care. It's all a whole lot of noise really but, as a half-competent somebody, how am I supposed to make sense out of it all?

As it happens, I made a very expensive choice ... much against the tide of easy internet commentary ... and now am hugely happy (though much poorer) with that. I imagine many others are less happy than they might be because the trolls prevailed.

Most people are not trolls and present their opinions civilly or even more often don't post at all. It's seems those who post often have a vested interest in their gear choices and often are more opinionated. In addition some of these folks have a nasty and argumentative edge and are ready to do battle with those whose can't see that their personal choices are the best thing since sliced bread. In many ways it's almost similar to the fervor of some religious zealots. Way over the top in my opinion.

I don't know that I would call it bashing. Canon sells a lot of cameras. Some are bound to have issues. As are some users. Turning to a forum like this seems a good way to sort things out. It brings issues to light in front of a broad knowledge base. Often these issues are not a camera fault but sometimes they are. Everyone learns and becomes better from the ensuing discussion. In my opinion that includes photographers and manufacturers alike.

You would definitely call it bashing if you frequented the forum's I do. About once a day I see a new Canon vs Nikon thread which usually starts off civilly by a new shooter looking for feedback on a new camera purchase and very shortly gets down in the mud with insults, accusations, unsubstantiated opinions, ignorance and extreme nastness before the thread wears itself out. That type of rancor is not accepted on this forum, but it is elsewhere.

We are all susceptible to 'confirmation bias' ... especially if a lot of money was involved. Maybe I could be too, even ... although I find this very, very hard to credit.

It seems that the camera brand selection is tied too often to the owner's self esteem (or lack thereof). I equate it with the analogy of the size of the lens vs. the length of the phallus that is another measure of self esteem.

 :p

A confident person needs not brag or complain too vehemently, and realizes that companies sometimes CANNOT make changes, and it is not that they are necessarily unwilling to make changes, or are complacent in their market dominance.

I don't care what people think.

I am happy with my gear.

Quite frankly I agree with me.

Yes its odd how we bash things ,I just bought a Harley Davison Heritage Classic.

The Handel bars are a little to high ,it weighs to much , the Heel toe gear change was a pain ( i changed that ) I could only just reach the rear brake so spent the day changing that too ,the alarm system is a pain ( have to have the fob in your pocket ) top speed is rather slow and it doesn't handle that great .

Oh and it is so loud VERY loud

but I Love it :) just like my 1dxmkII that has far to many buttons lol

I think the differences are pretty small in today's cameras.
You should be able to get keepers with most equipment. ( If you have moderate skills.)
Once you have heavily invested in gear it can be very expensive to change systems and any new system you adopt will have some faults.
I prefer to shoot with only one system, but some are happy to mingle products and often with success.

Happy New Year!

...you forgot Intel vs. AMD, Win vs. Mac et cetera ad infinitum.

It's another of those things humans do, out of frustration over fear of failure at mating rights and desperation to at least give the appearance of having more survival units than the other guy.

Why is everyone bashing people comparing and talking about gear on a gear forum.. Sort of silly, no. That's what this forum is for, talk about gear. Compare every screw, every feature. Seems sort of silly to get on a gear forum and insult people talking about gear.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
