Are they a prerequisite for glamour photography ?

I'm not criticizing anyone's photographic skills here, but there are far nicer/sexier shoes available. I don't imagine for a second that the models wear these things in real life, so I'm wondering why they're standard issue for this genre of photography.

I have a pretty crappy internet connection here, so as I'm watching the image appear on the screen my experience goes a bit like this:

- Hmm, nice background
- Ah, they used a hair light
- Good hair do, I wonder if my wife would consider something like that..
- Ooh, I like that dress/bikini top/nipple tassels..........chainmail ?!!!...wth ?
- Great figure, I wonder if my wife would consider wearing something like that....
- Wow, those legs go on, like, forever.
.
.
.
- Ugh. Shoes from a Benidorm strip club circa 1994

It's probably just me, though...

I don't know what kind of heels hookers wear, but one shoe style often turns up in G&N that, to my taste, is just plain ugly. These are the heels with the entire sole built up very thick. They're such massive shoes that they make a model's feet look big. As an adolescent, absorbing this culture's standards of beauty, I understood that ideally a woman's hands and feet were delicate and tapered. Clunkiness was to be avoided. What happened since?

These are the shoes I'm talking about. To me, women's feet should look petite regardless of their actual size. Adding a solid inch thick block of plastic to the bottom of the shoe kind of does the opposite.

I know in the Portland Oregon market "stripper heels" tend to be in a lot of models bags. They come in handy in our studio as we have a pole for "pole dancing" shots. I think there is a time and a place for them. I think for a lot of people they equate stripper heels with sexy because thats what the strippers wear, and we have a ton of strip clubs in the Portland area. They are also some what inexpensive when it comes to non every day shoes. A lot of people are not going to drop hundreds of dollars on shoes for a single photoshoot.

When I think of hooker heels, I think acrylic. But my old foot commute used to take me through Times Square.

That's the general shape, yes. The shoes I see in G&N aren't transparent. They're often red or black and more closed than the one you show, which is more of a sandal. So they make feet look big and awkward.

I've always found them to be a bit odd, heels in general I'm not a big fan of, but what they do for posture is admittedly sometimes of value in some shoots.

Eh, people do what they want.

It is exceedingly rare that I notice a woman's shoes in the GN section.

High heels make a woman's legs look longer but there's a limit to how high heels can be. Adding a thick sole allows the heels to be even higher and as such makes the legs look even longer. That's the only reason I can think of for these shoes. But they are ugly indeed.

Another visual effect of high heels is to create a more graceful angle between the lower leg and the foot than the approx. 90° angle when standing barefoot or in flats. But, again, a thick sole doesn't change this angle; it only lengthens the shoe heel.

My daughter calls those "hoe-stacks."

I'm not sure why they are considered particularly sexy.

High heels are sexy because they mince a woman's step (she can't run away!), cause her hips to sway, shorten the visual length of the foot (think of Chinese foot binding), and enhance the calves.

Strappy shoes are sexy (an allusion to bondage?).

Exposing toes is sexy because what female cleavage is not?

I can't think of how elevating the sole really improves on any of that.

Have her write it down. I bet she'll spell it "ho-stacks"–bringing us back to the thread title.
