I currently own a Sirui T-005bx aluminum tripod that I use for travel. Although it has served me relatively well, I am thinking of upgrading to a similar model (T-025x) in Carbon Fiber.
The reason I want to upgrade is that the T-005bx always seems so flimsy compared to my main tripod (gitzo series 2 mountaineer). I know comparing these two tripods is like comparing apples and
oranges, but would a Carbon Fiber tripod be a significant enough of an upgrade over aluminum to justify buying a new travel one (my aluminum tripod is in almost new condition)? I would like a new
travel Gitzo, but I can't justify the cost. (Sirui CF is about $200 vs. $800 for gitzo).

So my main question is: Is Carbon Fiber that much better for stability than aluminum?

(My current camera is a Canon 80D, and the heaviest lens I would put on it while traveling would be a F4 70-200mm, although I am contemplating switching to a Fuji XT-2 for portability)

I just purchased the Sirui T-2205X for my travel tripod. I have a trip to Ireland this summer and there was no way I was lugging along my huge Induro legs. I love it so far, but it is not a direct replacement for a standard pair of legs.

I don't think you'd be able to compare any compact unit to your Gitzo... aluminum or carbon; they're just in a different league. Even a compact unit from Gitzo/RRS will feel spindly next to their full sized counterparts. Just get the best you can afford based on your needs and be done with it. It's a compromise.

Good Article. I guess I'll be keeping my aluminum sirui for travel. The weight differential between it and the CF is almost negligible for a tripod that small. Thanks for the link.
