Quick question for anyone using the 80D do you know if the Speedlight 430EX II external flash is compatible with the new 80D? I just purchased this flash from Canon last year and I wanted to upgrade to the new 80D but I have no idea if the newer 80D is compatible with that flash. I've done some searching online and can't seem to find anyone talking about the compatibility with the 80D and the flash.

Yes, your 430EX II will work just fine with the 80D. I have an 80D/580EX II/430EX II/270EX II. All work together nicely.

Awesome~ Thank you so much!! I did not want to have to buy a new flash and I think the 80D will be a nice upgrade to my current 50D

I have the same equipment. The 80D with the speedlite 430 ex II. But it is so unreliable. What am I doing wrong? On the TTL setting the pictures can range from too bright or too dark. If the camera is set to automatic it always takes a picture at the widest f-stop which is pretty useless if you are doing portrait or a nice group photograph. I do not want to ever use a shallow depth of field. I always prefer to take portrait pictures on F7.1 or f8. the only way I can achieve this is by manually setting the camera to manual 1/250 and f8. I set the flash to TTL mode and it should balance the requirements and give me a perfect exposure but it does not. The picture can be highly Overexposed or for no apparent reason drastically underexposed. this makes no sense to me. the only way I'm actually managing to achieve to take pictures is to treat it like an old manual Flash and stay on one position and do tests shots by varying the power of the flash from full power to 1/2 power and adjusting the ASA on the camera to get a good exposure. this is so frustrating and stressful if you are in the environment when the subject keep moving. Please can you help.

I did a couple of photographic sessions on prom night with this equipment and they were totally useless. Again they were overexposed and considering it was a nice bright sunny day and I was using 100 ASA. I wanted to use the flash as fill in. even by using it on half power they were still too overexposed. in fact I had to use the on-board flash on the 80d because the speedlite was just destroying every photograph I took on it.

Help

Shoot in manual mode. Set your exposure manually for the background. I prefer a little under exposed. Use your flash in ttl mode for your subject.

Yep, he’s doing something wrong. I use a 60D and an 80D and can move my 430EX II between the two bodies without and ill effects. The swap is very reliable, no changes needed. Having said that I use the flash in “auto” and the bodies in shutter priority.
