$40 ebay ring light test

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for a friend(she's really into make up and a they all use them to take selfies with their phones for social media)

I decided since I had in in hand to take a couple shots to test it out

Was not expecting much from it since it was just a cheap 45 watt unit, but was very surprised, it took me a total of 2 minutes to take out the stand, set up the light and click off 2 frames.


If you're into run and gun style, not having to worry about settings or moving around lights and just need the shots quick these are game changing for what the price is.

I just bought my first ring light about 2 months ago. They provide really nice flat lighting for those times when I need it. The catchlights in your shots are the reason I'll never use a ringlight on people.

Are you opposed to modifying the catchlights in post? There are so few pixels involved it almost seems trivial.

As to the catchlights? Agree, very distracting and ugly. But because they are so small and would probably take no more than a minute to fix, an insignificant problem.

I have been looking at many posts here regarding ring lights and see many people like and dislike these for different reasons. Whichever the reason, everyone has their preference as I have read but I had never used one so I'm very interested in using one.

As I can only image there being many different uses for the ring light, I would like to experiment with this on people during shoots and for possible use for a photo booth. As I am not willing to pay top dollar for a ring light or if it really is necessary, the $40 light seems more of up my ally. I know like everything else we buy, we get what we pay for. Hopefully this one may last some time, meaning lasting for at least half a year or more.

Is this ebay item bright enough? As I have not seen one in person only diy ring lights , not so pro and pro equipment on youtube.
