Sell my old Tamron 17-50 2.8 for a Canon 17-55 2.8 or other?

Been trying to sell off my old Canon 40D body with no bites, so figured I'd consider selling it with a lens (my Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non-VC) to make it more appealing. Thought is to use those funds to get the Canon 2.8, mainly for the USM as the Tamron is bloody noisy when shooting video!
The Tamron has been very good, but at times, doens't seem as sharp as I would like.
Pretty sure I've answered my own question, and from what I've read, the Canon has the edge overall in image quality.
I also would like faster focusing speed.
I would like to maintain 2.8 (as opposed to say the 17-40 F4L).
The other lens on radar is the new Sigma 2.8 as well...

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!
1DXII - Canon 300 2.8 IS, 100-400 II, 70-200/2.8 II, 24-70 2.8 II, 85 1.8 - 1.4x II - F-Stop Lotus Backpack - ThinkTank Retrospective 20 & Speed Racer V2 - Peak Design Slide Flickr Collection (external link)

I would go with the Sigma 17-50 OS if you are shooting subjects where you don't need super sharp corners. If you want to shoot a lot of scapes where corner performance is vital to you, the Canon 17-55 does a better job in the corners. In the center they are pretty even and you just pay more for the Canon.

Canon 7D/350D, Σ17-50/2.8 OS, 18-55IS, 24-105/4 L IS, Σ30/1.4 EX, 50/1.8, C50/1.4, 55-250IS, 60/2.8, 70-200/4 L IS, 85/1.8, 100/2.8 IS L, 135/2 L 580EX II, 430EX II * 2, 270EX II.

Thanks - are you referring to the new art version or the older sigma as well? Is focusing speed just as good?
Most of my photography is people, animals, automobiles (moving and not), some portrait stuff.
Any noise issues with focusing and video vs the canon?

Really pretty crazy how loud that focus motor is.

If you can get away without zoom, I'd consider the canon pancake lenses and maybe the new 50 ... all STM since you are doing video. Of course this takes away your stabilization, so depending on your shooting style and set up, it might not be a good idea.

I'd like to stay with IS and zoom - while I'd love to go with a couple of primes, my prime (aka wife) would prefer the zooms for now!
Yeah, it's a tough one Sigma vs Canon - depending on what you read, they are very comparable. My heart says Canon, but my brain says play it safe and go with Sigma - worried I'll just end up selling the Sigma anyway, but maybe by then they'll have made the Canon even better...
The Canon has the AF edge and edge to edge, er edge, but the Sigma has the price advantage and seems to match or beat it some areas - can get a brand new one with warranty and have $$ left over for a flash that's more compatible with my 7DII...

After much deliberating, my brain won this time, I ordered the Sigma. I've been pleased with my sigma 10-22...
Picked it up New for $449 CAN. Left me room to maybe order a Neewer cheap flash to try. Seeing as how I use one a handful of times per year. :)

as far as i know there's no new art version of the 17-50mm...the only art version close to that is the 18-35f1.8...

if i were you i would find a focal length you generally use, and look at one of the new STM primes

It's a good idea - will have to pay close attention to my EXIF data and see if there is a trend - can LR or any other program track and chart that kind of data? (i.e., what focal length and shutter speeds are most common?)

When you apply sort filters under metadata in the library module in LR (grid view), as you keep applying more terms it shows you the number of images that will be selected. Although not presented as a graph it is really easy to read the numbers, and also very quick too, Just go to the All Photos view to see the details for everything, or go to specific folders, or even smart collections. If you are using LR and really want a graph then you could just type the data in manually to a spreadsheet to graph it. Most of the time when it comes to exposure settings they are all going to fall into a 10 stop window at worst. Even at 1/3 stop setps that only needs you to transpose at the most 30 values. For a one off look to see what kit you might want to buy it's not too onerous.
