Have had this lens for around 8 years and am looking to upgrade camera to a EOS 6d. Is this lens compatible with 6d? Have had a hard time trying to get an answer. I read that it may fit onto camera but damage mirror because it is not compatible,

That lens is an EF lens which basically means it will fit on every EOS Dslr, including the 6D.

Eos M, 5DII, and some lenses.

It's fine. I have that lens and the 6D and there is no issue whatsoever.

In fact, it's a pretty nice combination. That lens is a pretty good value. It's not the same as the 70-200 L, but it's also not priced like one. The image quality is decent. The low noise on the 6D is nice too. It would be a good combination for (for example) some moderate wildlife work.

The lens in question will work just fine on a 6D. It is also a huge bargain. You'd have to spend a lot of money to do just a little bit better.

Version II of your lens has just been released and seems to be a nice upgrade:

It is a nice lens. I've upgraded to a 70-200 f/4L IS but I got some shots with this lens I really like (even back on the old Rebel XT - 350D):

Yes Sir, It will work. EF Lens means yes on any EOS Camera, Full Frame and ASP-C Camera. EF-S Lens only on a APS-C Camera...............

I was thinking about this while stuck inside during a snow storm. I was thinking how much of a difference is there between the resolving power of the 70-300 vs. the 70-200. You can pull up MTF's for the two lenses and read (and re-read) until the proverbial cows come home. But there's nothing like spending some hands-on time and getting first-hand knowledge. Here's what I found...

First, from the center...
