Hey guys,

Been away for a long while due to insurance/court settlement BS. I had a bunch of gear stolen in a home break-in, and been dealing with (almost 3 years now) the fallout, suing parents of the teen that stole my stuff ect. Drama aside, everything is done now.

I have not replaced my gear as i took a step back because of this whole situation. However now that it has passed the end, the bug got me again. I went to some races recently and I swear I kept reaching for my r strap. I have a full season of racing lined up along with a bunch of airshows so its time to purchase what I need. I have been researching for the past week on what body I want to get, and the new lineup of lenses. With that said the gear that was stolen was as follows:

1D Mk III
5D Mk II
70-200L F4
120-300 Siggy 2.8 OS
All of my backdrop and lighting stuff, remote triggers and my TC's

Stuff that was not stolen that i still have (and the reason I am sticking with Canon):
24-105L I
50 1.4
85 1.8
580EX II
430EX II

Basically I was cleaned out of most of my bodies and long lenses, along with the lighting gear.

So with what I said above (sports/racing/airshows) and some landscaping, what would you get with a 7k dollar budget?

Right now I am leaning towards a 5DIV + 7D2 (i can buy a barely used one from a friend for ~1100), and maybe something like the 100-400L II or the Tammy 150-500 G2 along with a Canon TC 1.4x III. I was thinking about two bodies as I like to have them on 2 R straps for the car races, keeping the wide stuff on the full frame and the long stuff on the crop. However the 5DMk IV and the 7D2 seem to be ultraclose in everything they due, with the 5DIV having some AF advantages, and the 7D2 having FPS and reach advantages. So its harder to justify two different bodies it seems compared to when I had the 1D III and 5D II. Am I offbase here?

What would you do?

5D Mark IV | 7D Mark II | 100-400L II | 24-105L | 50MM f/1.4 | 85MM f/1.8 | Sigma 1.4x TC | 580EX II | 430EX II |

I don't know what kind of reach you need but I think the two bodies are ok. I'd choose a 100-400L (for the 7D2) and a 70-200L (for the 5D4). Maximizes range with some overlap of effective focal lengths. Dropping the TC would cover over half the cost of a 70-200 F4 like you had.

Just my thoughts on the problem although it might not provide enough reach. You already have the short end covered. I like using two bodies.

So I pulled the trigger on part of my replacement gear. I bought a Canon 5D Mark IV today. Just got home and was playing around with it in my living room. I have to say this is a remarkable piece of technology.

And the high iso performance is out of this world. Tech sure has come a long way in 3 years.

Now to dig around for lenses and/or a second body.
