Going in May, a xmas gift from my wife. Hitting Puget sound, Hubbard glacier and a handful of towns. Any thoughts on shooting from a ship? I have a decent 10-18 and a 55-250 kit lens for my XS-I. If its worth while I'm open to renting a better lens. Honestly, my technical skills are low, though my enthusiasm is high.
Thanks for sharing any insights.

I went to Alaska last year. Brought my T4i, 10-18 STM, 15-85 USM, and 55-250 STM. All 3 lenses covered 95% of my images. I found that the 55-250 captured what I needed EXCEPT eagles and some wildlife. I wished that I had a longer lense for wildlife but other than that, my 3 mentioned lenses did the job.

That leaves a rather big 37mm "hole" in focal length, and from my experience on Alaska cruises, that is a very usable area of focal length. I would be considering a purchase of the 18-55 mm. Since the STM version came out you can get it for about $65 (see https://www.adorama.com …K8Lu-nGn4Np7PbBoCdFTw_wcB (external link)).

You could consider the STM version, but truthfully the reasons why you would want the STM aren't well supported in the XSi so why part with the extra $$.

I have been on 3 Alaskan cruises. My lenses are 24-70 & I take my 300mm with a 1.4 teleconverter which is perfect for capturing the glaciers calving or any whales, dolphins, otters in the water. If you go up the Lynn Canal out of Juneau, whales are very abundant. I have even photographed bears on the shore & eagles fishing right along side of the boat.
Have fun!!!!!

May I highly recommend that in the future just fly into Anchorage, rent a car & go travel the Kenai Peninsula at least once in your lifetime. It is amazing!!!

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I've been to Alaska twice, on the ship I found that most of my shots were taken with my 18-135. It has been a great walk around lens for me, covered images on board and pulling into and walking around ports well. Also had my 150-500 on another camera that was used for most shots while on land excursions ( 7 days from Fairbanks, Denali, Anchorage).
John from PA makes a good point and it is a range that you may miss having along.
I agree with Maureen, a long lens will be nice for the occasions she mentioned.
Enjoy your cruise to Alaska, it still remains my favorite place to cruise and photograph.

On went on a cruise to Alaska last year. When I went I used a 6D with 24-70 on the ship and for landscapes/environmental portraits and a 100-400 on a 70D for wildlife. That combination worked very well. I had brought a few other lenses but basically did not use them at all.
