I am looking to upgrade my Canon 7d mkii to Wifi this spring. I am most concerned with setting up a wireless remote environment via a Wifi hotspot that enables me to set my camera up on a tripod and view and set camera controls including AF via my iPad Pro and/or laptop. My main interest is entomology and macro photography. I have been doing as much online research as possible and it appears that I have one of three options open to me:

1. Canon WiFi W-E1 adapter
2. Toshiba FlashAir
3. EyeFi Mobi Pro

I understand that option 1 seems to difficult to find ATM, and that 2 & 3 offer memory storage capacity in addition to wifi, but I am wondering which, out of the three, offer the best provision of wifi hotspot and full camera control. Also, are there any other options that I haven't listed. Any comments and suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

I would check out https://www.tethertools.com/camera/canon-eos-7d/ (external link). Also do a search on CamRanger. I know some people using it very successfully for bird photography.

I just received the Canon W-E1 this week so they may be becoming more available. I had pre-ordered it @ $39 from B&H when Canon first announced them. I connected to the camera using my laptop and all the features through Canon Utilities seem to be available the same as if you tethered with the USB cord. The Wi-Fi card seamed to work well and the range is stated to be 32 feet. I have not tried it with my phone or the Canon Connect app yet, but according to on-line reviews, 3rd party apps will also work. In this review, there is an app for Android that will do focus stacking shots for macro ( http://www.the-digital-picture.com …n-W-E1-Wi-Fi-Adapter.aspx (external link) ) .

I've had issues every time I've tried to make my 70D work with it's built-in WIFI with their iOS app. I don't know if that *should* color my perception of a new Canon W-E1, but it does. In my limited experience they don't know WIFI. Or iOS. Whatever. Initial reviews at B&H are pretty mixed :-(

On the other hand, Camranger has been a 100% solid and versatile performer. If you're a tinkerer, there's a homebrew solution built on the same hardware for under $50 USD.

Another possibility is CamFi, which kind of falls between the DIY route and CamRanger price wise. I bought a used camera body a while back and the seller bundled their CamFi unit with it. I don't use it all that frequently but it's been reliable and does what it's supposed to when I do use it. http://www.cam-fi.com/en/index.html (external link)

Here's info on the budget approach to something like Camranger.

It consists of five bits:
The same TP-Link portable battery powered router that Camranger uses, $30. Maybe a spare battery for it.

Some way to attach it to your cam. Camranger uses a little zippered pouch with a carabiner to hang off yours camera strap. I use a mini-ball head with a clamp threaded on, in the hot shoe.

A 6", 12" or 18" USB A to Micro B or Mini B cable, depending on where you mounted the router, and what USB connection your Nikon or Canon camera has. The right cable probably came with your camera.

The firmware that you load to that router.

The $10 app for iOS or Android, or the free Linux, Windows or MacOS apps.

Since I have two Camrangers, plus the nifty pan/tilt head, I've not *yet* tried the budget approach. Many others report good results! Some people would be happy with the $50 version, some with the $300 Camranger...

Can't thank you enough for going to the trouble of providing such a detailed comment. I might just be tempted to try this approach. Thanks again.

If you are somewhat technically inclined the TP Link router solution is great.

I have used it with an Eos5D MK III and a Eos 7D MK II. I have paired the router with a Samsung Tab S2. I have used the combination multiple times at events and it works...
