My criteria it has to be interchangeable lens and decently light weight. I am going to be taking some video (4k, 1080P doesnt matter to me much) and mostly photos. So I prefer to "capture the moment" without losing sharp focus.
I am planning a trip over seas to Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong for about a month and half, but I do not want to bring my 5d Mark 3 since I want to carry something small and easy to carry.
Anything under 1200? I dont care if it is used or new.

Price range? I ended up with an EOS M5 and have been happy. I have the adapter to use my EF and EF-S lens if I want to, which was a major plus to me. Not having to haul the 7d2 is nice.

But for more money, there are several mirrorless cameras that fit the bill and have more native lenses and are more mature. The M5 seems to be Canon's "catch up" mirrorless camera.

The EOS M5 from Canon is a unique mirrorless that is quite interesting as it can shoot very good video with dual pixel technology. Virtually identical high iso performance as the 80D. This is where you should determine what you really want in a camera system. You can have a nice 22 f/2 (equiv 35mm) and your selection of native glass variable aperture zooms. Your criteria kinda tells me it's not ideal to use larger EF or EF-S lenses with an adapter. Only thing I wish Canon made was a 24mm equivalent fast prime.

This leads me to say Fuji has great offerings. The video capabilities of the 16mpx bodies are absolute garbage and a waste of time. However the still photography is a complete joy for me. If you go for the X-T2 that would be your "mini" fuji version of 5dmk3 in some respects but with 4k video capabilities.

If your not a UWA guy you can truly enjoy the "excellent" 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 image stabilized zoom, and a wide selection of primes equivalent to 24mm, 35mm, 50mm in fast glass.

If I went the lean minimal setup I could virtually have a small back pack and lug a 16mm f/1.4, 10-24mm and 55-200 and cover huge ground. If I still had my 18-55 kit lens that would be even better to throw in the bag. I'll very likely pickup another 18-55 or get the 16-55 f/2.8 zoom.

What you'll discover is the fuji mirrorless "everything is sharp" with no complaints of front/back focus.

The Sony a6000 is a more than capable camera, and can be had on the used market for less than half of the M5. That's a $500 savings you could be using toward your experiences while travelling. If planning on using your EF glass, there is really no advantage (besides AF) for the M5 over the a6000. They both have great adapters that work with your EOS glass, and unless you're planning on shooting some BIF or sports while you're on vacation the AF shouldn't make much of a difference.

I agree ^^^^^ a Sony A6000/6300 with a few lenses. If you want a pocket carry, I highly suggest the
Sony rx100 ver 3/4/or 5.....

OP,

Rent/borrow a fuji X-T10 with 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 image stabilized kit lens. Tell us how much you LOVE IT ;)

I found I loved keeping the kit lens at 18mm @ f/2.8 and the results were amazing. This is were I deeply regret selling my kit lens. I do have the temptation of buying an 18mm f/2 pancake but my logic tells me I'd get more use repurchasing an amazing kit lens again. Yes.....18mm @ f/2.8 isn't so far off from an 18mm f/2 prime (no image stabilization too vs kit lens)

I don't think an A6000 or 6300 with "usable" 16-50 kit lens can compare in IQ vs X-t10 or X-E2(s) with 18-55 kit lens. For travelling when video is not a criteria I'd confidently use my fuji. If you considering an A7Rmk2 or A7mk2 you have good options in lenses these days.

The tough thing I find is that there is no fast 24mm prime equivalent in the sony or canon crop world.

All depends on what you want from your gear.

anything under 1200 USD. New or Used.
I was leaning towards a7ii or a Sony 6000+. I like the Fuji XT2, but I can not justify a replacement ish of a camera. I just want a light camera with 1-2 lenses for landscape and city photography. Adapting lens is a option, but I do not mind buying the manufacture lenses for the body like the XT2 and their lenses or panasonic.

if you can even wing the a7ii, FE 28 + 50 shouldnt cost too much. Both stabilized so low light shooting a major plus, considering how dark HK is.

I may go to vietnam this year, and bringing the whole sony kit 10, 24-70f4, 35 f2.8, 50 f1.8, 70-300. Possibly rokinon 85 f1.4 as well to pair with 35 at times. 70-300 may be substituted with 200mm prime as SE asia isnt that great with long lenses.

I hear the grey market in Asia such as Japan and Hong Kong would be great for me to buy one over there, but I am looking at prices on the forum too.

Check out fred miranda's site and do a search for "fuji" on the buy/sell.

The fuji 16mpx bodies have similar high iso capabilities of my canon 5dmk2. That's decent for a crop sensor body. You'd be able to dip into used gear: fuji xt10 with 18-55 kit lens and a fast prime. Another consideration is in good light the image quality of the 55-200 f/3.5-4.8 is pretty close to a 70-200 f/4IS IMO.

You do not have this kind of options with a crop sensor Sony body. However the full frame A7 bodies have more FL options.

I never though a "secondary" Fuji system could be so versatile in even more serious applications. The X-T2 is almost like a fuji version of a 5d mk3 in high iso and AF. The older XT1 is probably a better performer than the 5dmk2 in some respects...... my subjective comments :)

I am considering the xt2. Maybe...
Sony's offerings are ideal, but battery life, heating, and auto focusing are the reasons why I'm not too keen on getting a Sony.

Don't get too caught up in the battery life issues with Sony. I get over 300 images per battery...just take another in your pocket and you are set...unless you are one that blasts away.

What AF issues are you talking about. I have an A7R and A6000 and have zero AF issues with either of them. I use native mount lenses on these cameras for the most part.

What I really like about the Sony system is when I travel I always take two cameras ( might never to in that place again so I want a backup ) with the A6000 being my backup to my A7R. The A6000 shares everything with the A7R...batteries, chargers, lenses, cards etc... so the only thing I need to pack extra to have a true backup camera is the camera...which is tiny.

Then when traveling, if I am out specifically to take photos...I use the A7R and leave the A6000 either in my room or just in my pack ( weighs nothing ). If I'm out not specifically for photography and want to go really light, I take the A6000 with either the Sony 28mm or the Sony 35mm lens and I have a nice light outfit that delivers great images.

Love that my main camera and my backup are basically 100% compatible and I always take both for travel.

The contrast detect of the A7R has been reported to back focus since it's does not phase detection AF.

As far as battery life is concerned the sony or fuji does not have bragging rights regarding long battery life. It's such a small battery that you can lug them in your pocket for spares.

Aznkid, if you do buy the X-T2 your in for a pleasant experience IMO. You may find the IQ hard to believe it's coming from a crop sensor and you'd wonder why you didn't buy such a lightweight secondary system sooner.

For a very high percentage of family photos lately I use my fuji's and Canon 80D for a mixture of fantastic video and stills. I wouldn't have been able to use those bodies if the IQ was not up to my standards.

heating, probably the most overblown issue. I do record 4K all the time, never overheated. If you're tripod mounted and leave your camera outside in Arizona weather, I guess it can overheat.

AF is fine with the A7ii, it's PDAF, not contrast detect. Great thing about the A7ii is that it has IBIS. So lenses like the 24-70f2.8 ii become stabilized. Granted, I'de never bring that on travel, it's an option if needed.

The AF is fast, even with canon lenses. I've used both A7ii and A7rii (own the rii) and AF speed is similar with the A7rii having larger coverage. Few samples, first 100mm f2 wide open, face detect tracking. Second, 55mm f1.8 wide open, face detect tracking. Sure, it's not fast as a 5Diii, but it's good enough for just about anything :p

at it's current state, you can adapt pretty much any lens, and have the ability to AF if you're interested in the adapting game.... you get caught in the scenario of too many options, not enough money :-P
