Favorite colaspable octabox around 4'

I'm looking to find a colaspable 4' octabox to use with my quadras and speedlites. What is your favorite and how much did it run you. I rather go the speedring route over the umbrella as the quadra use a 7mm shaft and most shafts for umbrellas are 8 mm. An inner diffuser is a must grids would be nice.

Fotodiox EZ-Pro with umbrella closing mechanism is a great value. Especially if you can get it with the deflection plate.
Only downside is a flimsy grid. They have one that is about 36".

I think Elinchrom's deep Octas are hard to beat. The 100cm/39" is just under 4 feet and is probably the most useful and popular size if you only have one.

I went with the 70cm, which is fantastic for portability (even "run and gun"), and the 150cm Indirect. The indirect can be used in a reflected mode (strobe facing inward, like umbrella but using a strobe mount instead) or facing out, the way the 70cm and 100cm work. You can see in a video on YouTube that Annie Libovitz has used the indirect adapter in a 39" deep octa.

The deep octa is quite versatile. You can use it as a regular Octa (both diffusers) and you can use one or no diffusers, As well as the deflector disks.

If you're looking for something fast and lightweight mainly for on location the Glow ParaPop 38" (and SMDV Speedbox) are really worth considering as well.

I've got both the Elinchrom deep octas and the Fotodiox. The Fotodiox are a great value, put out great light, and are easy to deploy, easier than the Elinchrom.

I love my SP Systems octabox. No grid but lip is deep. Same shape as Elinchrom deep octa but umbrella style. Construction is top notch. B&H site says not available but then another link on their site says special order.

My basement is a sea of broken modifiers, but my Fotodiox EZ PRO has survived a ton of abuse and keeps going strong.

I've been happy with the Fotodiox EZ PRO as well. I use the 48". And you can swap out the adapter ring to fit whatever mount you want.

I'm a Elinchrom strobie. I really like the Cheetahstand Rice Bowls. 3 sizes. Comes with grid for the RB-90 at least.

If you were expecting a side-by-side head-to-head comparison of these modifiers, this review is not for you. Over the course of 10 or so years I have owned 6 different octaboxes made by Profoto, Elinchrom and Photoflex. I don't have the rice bowl and I do get the desire to compare with side by side shots, since this does reveal differences which are hard to tease out. But in a certain way, when it gets down to minute differences, the skill of the photographer weighs much heavier in the balance.

This leads to two issues. The first is getting so caught up in testing that we fail to get a piece of gear and master it instead of constantly chasing a magic solution. The second is that side by side tests sometimes reveal that the photographer knows how to use one modifier to its advantage and not the other.

Both of these modifiers, based on images I have seen, are capable of good results and are fairly similar in capability. Of the images I have seen from others, I see more of the quality I like in pictures from the Deep Octa, so I would be biased this direction. If you look at images from both and tend to prefer a quality from one, get that one. If they both look good to you, just get one, stop looking back and just use it and master it.

I don't think either would be a bad choice.

A different approach may be a Westcott Apollo Orb. Looks like an umbrella, with a twist. While no inner baffle, the design of the Apollo is to have the light fire into the back of the silver colored backing, like a reflective umbrella. It also has an outer diffuser as well. Nice soft light. Plus it can house multiple Speedlites or a strobe without the need of a speed ring.
