so i bought a lens used on ebay, mainly because it fell close enough to my "it's only $100 for a lens, it's worth a shot" category

the lens looks to be ugly...seller listed it saying there is coating loss on the front element...

i'm just curious what to really expect from that...i'm assuming contrast, and maybe flare? is there any other things to look for when i give it a whirl?

I think the most important effect is the loss of contrast. I don't think flare would be a problem if the coating is only missing from the front element.

i probably should've said what lens it was...it's an 8-16mm...and the coating loss is putting a big blob on the image...i'm going to try and play around with it today, and see if there's any way it's avoidable...i wonder how much a front element replacement would cost...if it's $200 or less, i'm still good...we'll see

you can see it here fairly easily...there's pretty much two spots that are bad, bottom left, and side left

IMAGE: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/478/31758139344_28307584b6_b.jpg

here's the vertical regular way i would shoot, and then reversed to put the spot in the sky...i thought about using it upside down to put the blur on the sky in landscape orientation

i will probably play around with it a bit, but i think i will send it to sigma in hopes of getting the front element replaced...if it's $200, then i've got $300 into it...which i'm fine with...hopefully it's not much more to replace

Really looks much worse than I thought, but your trick of putting the spots in the sky works fine !

Can you take a picture of the front element to see how it looks like ?

i mean for a $100...i'm fine with whatever i get out of it...i kinda just wanted to see how much wider it would be than my 10-20mm...it's pretty substantial...although i'm not sure what my thoughts are on not being able to use a CP, or ND filter...although i'm going to try and make a DIY rear ND filter...

Try buffing the lens with Pledge or some similar product and see what happens.

no offense, but i can't tell if this is serious or not...i'll give it a shot if you are

took it out today, and it's rough...the flare is just brutal...will post some pics later...but i'm having a hard time finding it usable in it's current condition...i think logically i'll have to either have it replaced, or figure something out

Actually I am serious. I use this to repair CDs and DVDs quite frequently. I also use it for the windshield on my motorcycle. It fills blemishes nicely and can be buffed out enough to be clear. That said I have never tried it on a camera lens. But looking at yours I don't see much to loose. If it is worse it can be removed with a little cleaner.
