I've been looking everywhere, and getting more confused. Many posts are a few years old, hoping to get some more recent recommendations on flashes.

Figured, maybe alleviate some of the confusion by asking here. ;)

Looking for 1 (and eventually a 2nd) flash for my 7D2. General purpose master flash as well as off-camera use and to eventually use 2 (or 3) in a home-studio setting. Will these work similar to the 430 or 580 - i.e., can the camera control the Yongnuo (or similar) flashes remotely - or do I need triggers for these?

Should I be looking at a wifi-flash? Hoping to spend under $200 (for possibly a pair of flashes)

Any specific model recommendations?
There is a 560EX and 565IV used for sale near me for about $60 CAN each.
560 wireless
568 EXII
600 EXIV wireless
There is also a set: 2 560 IV + 560-TX controller for just a touch over $200 (CAN)

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!

I don't think think Yongnuo makes any wifi flashes. They do have wireless flashes that communicate via radio signals though. The 560IV has a built-in transmitter but it isn't an e-ttl flash so if that is what you are needing, don't get it.
The 600EXIV nor the 565IV exist. You probably mean 600EX and 565EX. The pop-up flash will be able to fire the flashes using the optical sensor so no triggers necessary. However if you want to use a remote to change settings and such, you will need a receiver.

Thank you! Yes, I copied down the model numbers incorrectly.
I can also pick up a used Canon 580EX II for $200CAN - may be a more reliable bet...

The Yongnuo's are a bit cheaply made but they do work well if you are on a budget. The only issue I encountered is the battery door plastics breaking because the plastic is very brittle. They can be replaced for $5.00 though. It wasn't on your list, but if you are looking for Yongnuo with ETTL, I'd go with the YN685. It has built-in receivers so all you will need is a trigger. No need to attach an extra receiver.

I agree with the poor build quality of the YongNuo flashes. I had 4 of them and switched to the Godox speed lights, I absolutely love them! They are built a little better but they have a rechargeable battery, HSS, ETTL and built in wireless receiver. They work extremely well with the Godox X1!

I would recommend you have a good look at these from Adorama, excellent service and they are the same lights as godox:

Thanks for the link! Certainly looks like a nice flash - considering the specs and Li-ion battery too - quite a bargain!

I have been totally happy with the build quality of the post-2014 Yongnuo YN-565EX. No broken battery doors, no pieces coming off or controls misbehaving - and that's counting 4 separately purchased ETTL units with tens of thousands of pops each. They have been nearly 100% reliable too, though the handful of misfires among those thousands of shots may not have been the strobes at all; it's hard to track down when it happens so rarely.

In fact, the only breakage I've had was when an athlete collided with one of my stands and knocked a pair of strobes 10 ft. to the concrete floor. Total damage: one flash tube, $10 to replace. Even the battery doors survived. :p

The only reason I'm moving to the Godox units for off-camera work is simple: the triggers are built-in, powered by the strobe battery. They are more reliable than the YN622 series, which often run their batteries low and start misfiring without any prior indication. I haven't put enough hours on the Godox strobes to tell whether they will live up to the high standard set by my Yongnuos. They do seem well made, and the batteries hold more charge and run cooler.

I have two Yongnuo YN568EX II and use them for off camera with Yongnuo 622C II wireless triggers... works perfectly from my 6D's flash menu on full ETTL, Manual and groups..

Only briefly tried flash to flash master/slave as this required a flash gun on the camera and was a little less flexible for my needs...

Build quality is pretty good considering but I have also read about the battery compartment door issue so I tend to be aware when changing batteries (which I do a lot when using my drip rig)

For the money I can't really fault them... paid £70 GBP for mine at the time and paid £110 GBP for 4 x 622C triggers... not far off the cost of just one canon speedlite

For the amount of use they get from me they are certainly better bang for buck...
