i went to an event recently and a photog was taking pics and printing them on to magnetic backing for the guests to take home
(i know its been around for a while) but wondering what type of printing/ process is this to print on to magnet ?

They are a little thick and heavier than regular ink jet paper buy they fit into every ink jet printer. They are flexible and can be cut and trimmed in any standard paper trimmer. Avery is one large manufacturer of them and Staple sells its own brand of them.

If you're just making refrigerator magnets or other decor items, the thin magnetic paper should suffice. If you want to make vehicle magnets or other heavier duty items, then thicker magnetic substrate (usually ceramic 30 mil or more) is required. They do make the magnetic paper that is printable, but some printers require the sheet be unmagnetized before printing, then magnetized after. 5D MkIII | 7D | Bronica ETRS
