you may indeed have valid reasons for buying such a tool, but there is not a reason that you 'have to' have such a tool for AF accuracy evaluation...

...the focus target gives the AF sensor a flat unambiguous target to focus upon, the ruler gives you marks which aids your eye in assessing focus and whether the point of best focus is at (or very close to) the same plane as the focus target
