I had the opportunity to finally visit this cool location today. I never knew these places existed until a few years ago.

I am not sure what this was. It was sitting on the tail section of the plane. You can see it in the above photo. It was very hard. My first thought was that it was a spare tire maybe? I didn't want to open the zipper to find out for fear that it might have been a life raft or something that would have been difficult to put back in there... :)

Maybe someone here knows what this is. If so, please chime in.

Dont get me wrong - planes are strong and great at doing what they are designed for - flying through the sky, just dont put an imovable object in there way or then they will be like a pizza against a wall.

It could be a Ballistic Parachute, deployed in an emergency to lower the plane intact to the ground. There will usually be some damage as it will still come down with enough force to often total the plane, but save the lives of the people inside.

you could probably google the rego numbers & look for FAA reports though...
