Challenge #624, The Devil's in the Details

This week's topic is those crucial details that the old saying is about. Show us a scene where something precise or intricate, or maybe just small, makes the picture interesting and meaningful.

Remember, if you post a photo, you may be the winner. Be prepared to host and judge a new challenge.

To submit, click POST TO THREAD and put your photo title in the first line of the post. Don't forget your camera model.

Post until Monday noon GMT, 13 February 2017.

Photo Submissions

  1. Camera -- Canon G-Series Camera G1, G2, G3, G5, G6, G7, G9, G10, G11, G12, G15, G16, G1X, G1X Mark II and Pro1 only.

  2. Time -- Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.

  3. Size -- Photo must be no less than 800 pixels and no more than 1280 pixels on the longest side, with NO BORDERS.

  4. Post-Processing -- Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.

  5. Posting --
    • One photo per photographer in each challenge.
    • Photo title in the message subject line.
    • Camera model.
    • EXIF data, if you like.

  6. Commenting -- No commenting on photos by anyone, including the photographer. Once the winners are declared, photographers can add comments to their images and everyone is invited to discuss.

  7. Photo Display -- Photos must appear in this thread to be eligible.

Time

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:
  • New Topic ... As soon as possible after winning.
  • Posting Starts ... Right after topic is announced.
  • Posting Stops ... Monday noon GMT.
  • Winners Announcement ... Tuesday noon GMT or earlier.

Comments and results

Another week of difficult decisions! I wish I could award ties, but here goes:

Trumper, "Try planning this detail": If I tried planning it, I'd end up with half a medallion at the far end and a third of one on the side. An interesting choice of subject and an appropriate treatment that raises the question "Does this thing go on forever?" Your shot makes me curious about the building and where it was.

Car, "Can you Move the Rubbish Please?" Now, this is exactly what I had in mind for the theme, an image that is made special by one subtle detail. In fact, the crucial detail, that tiny bit of red, was so subtle that I had to hunt for it to figure out your title. Plus, the picture is funny!

Jim Askew, "HO Gauge Coal Car": Good job at showing how the accurate details add appeal to miniature models, kind of a cross between technology and cuteness. The workshoppy background provides a human context for your subject, and its blur brings out, by way of contrast, how careful the construction of the car is.

corythosaurus, "1897 Details": Lovely shot of an impressive antique. I like the way the colors came out. Was this in natural light, or did you "help it along"?

Maureen Souza, "My Darling Clementine": Again, nice color effects, few hues but they're complementary. A fruit taken apart is a still-life subject that you don't usually see and probably most people wouldn't have thought of. Clever title.

Winners (the hard part for me)

#1: corythosaurus
#2: Maureen Souza
#3: Car

Special award for adherence to theme (i.e., reading the judge's mind): Car

Fun challenge OhLook! Loved the entries this week. Congratulations to the winners :-)

I really liked Cory's pocket watch. The details in watches from that time frame is simply amazing.

Thank you for hosting and judging, OhLook! And, thank you for the top place and congrats to Maureen and Car. Great variety of entries this week, all fantastic representations of the subject. Trumper's messes with me each time I scroll on the page.

The watch is a family heirloom and the detail is quite amazing. And, it still works perfectly.

Congratulations to Cory and Maureen and thanks OhLook! for hosting and judging. I like mind reading comment - I was sure I'd missed the mark compared to the other entries but kept it up anyway. It tickled me that the wall art looked like it was looking at the rubbish :-)
It was taken in Glasgow during the Merchant City Festival. There were a few pop up bars in the area and one was in Tontine Lane, a place you usually have no call to go to but was full of wall art, including this one.
I too loved the pocketwatch Cory, they obviously don't make them like they used to.

Actually, you were the only entrant who got it. In choosing this theme, I thought of ways it might be executed. Maybe a little animal or human face is peeking out from somewhere in a larger scene, the rest of the figure being hidden. Or there's a silly sign posted in a landscape or a city scene. Or, in an array of objects, just one is turned the other way (birds on a wire or something) or is a different color. But then, when four of five photos featured a detailed subject filling a large part of the frame, I decided my description must not have been clear enough.
