Had a late afternoon meeting in Kiev yesterday so went for a scenic walk after dark. This is the memorial to the great famine between the wars.

Like the second one a lot. Don't know the significance of the statue but love the snow on her. Great shot.

In 1933 Stalin demanded that all the food in the Ukraine was sent back to Russia and millions died. My wife's grandfather lost all his brothers and sisters. It was a very bleak period in Ukrainian history.

The girl represents the starving children. She is clutching an ear of corn. The whole monument area is quite moving especially considering how recent the famine was and that it was not caused by natural shortages.

I am sure there are people here who have more detail but that kind of explains the significance of the girl.

Thanks for appreciating the image, I hope you can see why I like it a little more now.
