Trigger for AB lights

I know that many of you use the AB lights, so before I go spending a ton of money on something that might work, I'm wondering if any of you can suggest a wireless trigger for the lights. The PC Sync cord is bound to pull a light over one day...and I'm trying to prevent that. I am looking for something cost effective that will work with my 20D, AB800's and Minolta light meter. Ebay has quite a few, anybody ever use any of these?

Thanks for all your assistance in advance!

I've heard good reports from the ebay ones, but I can't recommend a specific brand or seller.

I use Quantum Radio Slaves. They are extremely reliable and have been around for 20 years or so. My units are about 12 years old and still reliable. Quantum makes a newer unit called the FreeXWire as well. http://www.qtm.com …set=yes&res=1024&resh=768 (external link)

Pocket Wizard units are newer, smaller, and more sophisticated, but a little more expensive. http://www.pocketwizard.com/ (external link)

Cameron in Canada produces a really good one. I use it with my flashes. No cord to get in the way. Reasonable, too.

I have been using this cheapo here http://cgi.ebay.com …ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)
with 2 AB 1600's for a little over a month and it works just fine.

I am not recommending it, but it works just fine.

BTW, dumb question does anyone know if I have to buy 2 x PocketWizard MultiMAX's to remotely triger my 580ex?

thanks :):)

You need a transmitter and a receiver.

either:

one multimax and a pocket wizard plus transmitter - or

one multimax and a pocket wizard plus receiver - or

2 multimax - or

pocket wizard plus receiver and transmitter. (cheapest)

I also use the Quantum Radio Slaves and they work great with my Canon 20D. One 'problem' with the Radio Slave system is you need a synch cord to connect the camera to the transmitter, whereas the Pocket Wizard attaches directly to the hot shoe, BUT it sticks up in the air a bunch. As clutzy as I am I would be afraid that I would bump it on something and break the hot shoe off of the camera, and besides I already have the Radio Slave system so I decided to make it work of my Canon. To make the Radio Slave transmitter fit, I took a little plastic hot shoe adaptor that I've had for years and attached the transmitter to it. It only sticks up about an inch or so above the camera. But after using it for several sessions I found the cord tended to get unplugged out of the PC socket in the camera quite easily. So I bent up a short piece of flat steel into an "L" shape, drilled a 1/4 inch hole in it and attached it to the camera using the tripod socket. The other end fits snugly up against the synch cord keeping it firmly attached to the camera. I basically have nothing in it except a little time.
