TGIF everyone!!! I was hoping that you all could help me with my "third world" problem.

I want a full frame camera to compliment my 60D and 7D MkII. My initial thoughts were to outright purchase the 5D MkIV or wait until the 6D MkII is released (whenever that may be).

However, after crunching numbers and thinking about this matter for weeks. Now, I am thinking about selling my 7D, battery grip, and a couple of seldomly used lens. The proceeds would go towards the purchase of a new Canon 1D X MkII.

My thought process was, why have spend $3,500 on the 5D MkIV so it could compliment the 7D MkII when I could spend a few more dollars and get the 1D X MkII? It'll be one tough pill to swallow, but I don't anticipate on second guessing myself as the 1D will be an upgrade.

So, I'm asking you all... Is the 1D X MkII really worth all of the trouble? Should I go with my initial thoughts and just outright purchase the 5D MkIV?

I consider myself as an enthusiastic photographer with intermediate skills. However, I'm growing and getting better every time I touch my camera. Not only that, but I missed some beautiful photo opportunities from my trip to Rome due to low lighting situation.

Your thoughts and opinion will be respected and greatly appreciated. So, please share them... I'm looking to get the ball moving as quickly as possible (like next week - Monday).

Thanks!!!!!

The 6D is currently a bargain, will handle low light and leave you some change for a new lens...

Tin Man's review is great! It's definitely going to push you closer towards the 1DX II.

A lot is down to what you photograph and what glass you have/need.

I photograph (mainly) wildlife with a 1DX (7D2 as backup) with the longest lenses I can get my hands on. I am looking for the fastest responding camera with the best AF and ISO performance that I can get. So, naturally I had to give the 1DX2 a go! I liked it very much - it is a fine camera and certainly the best available for my uses. However it didn't seem to be a huge upgrade from my 1DX (1). Certainly better in every respect but not enough better to separate me from my cash.

When I moved from the 1D4 to the 1DX it was a very significant upgrade and was well worth the cost. With the 1DX2 I am not so sure. I am not trying to put you off one (FAR from it!) but a good second hand 1DX (1) would be a lot cheaper and is still the second best sports/wildlife/action camera available in my humble opinion.

Do you need the ultimate in speed/responsiveness or is IQ more important? Would spending a bit less on a camera allow you to improve your glass? All factors to weigh up before you decide.

In my case, if my budget was not so limited, I would get a 1DX2 in a heartbeat! However the Mk 1 does very nicely for the foreseeable............

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Magoosmc, I played with that angle, too... Then I thought about the action shots at the Chicago Bulls and the night and cloudy Chicago White Sox games. The 6D would help with the lighting issue, but wouldn't do anything for the fast paced action.

Thanks Johnf3f... I'm considering that move as well.

The 1Dx2 is the best camera I have ever used. It IS NOT just a sports camera. In fact I rarely shoot sports. I shoot 25 weddings a year and work in a portrait studio. Camera files are the best I have seen from canon. Ability to capture in poor light is unsurpassed by anything in canons line up and the custom functions is also unsurpassed.

There is nothing in canons line up that comes close and its a bloody steal at $5900.00 with a 400K shutter life. The AF system is off the charts outstanding. Best servo I have ever seen

Magoosmc, I played with that angle, too... Then I thought about the action shots at the Chicago Bulls and the night and cloudy Chicago White Sox games. The 6D would help with the lighting issue, but wouldn't do anything for the fast paced action.

As I shoot sports, here are the thoughts I have on the 5D4.

1) It focuses in low light just as well as the 1DX2. The 6D, 5D4, 80D, 7D2, and the 1DX2 can lock focus in very low light.
2) The 5D4 boasts more resolution, and for sports that is very good for cropping. The 5D4 is now officially the FF replacement for the 1D4 (according to me :)), which was one of the best sporting cameras of the past.
3) When you shoot high ISO with the 1DX2 and 5D4, but then have to equalize the pixel density by either resizing one up, or the other down, the end results are so similar that in a final result, you won't be able to tell which is which.
4) The 5D4 AF is wonderful and works well for sports and BIF, etc.
5) The fully working touch screen is a dream and it speeds up so many things, like getting through menus, image review, etc.
6) The 5D4 lacks in burst speeds though, at 7fps, it would be nice to have more during sports.
7) The battery life isn't as good as the LP-E4 series on the 1D, so again during sports shooting, keep an extra battery in your pocket.

Wifi is another little perk and if you like to share photos quickly on social media during an event, it works very well. However, that is a very small factor and doesn't play into decisions much for many.

Even though the 1DX2 has better AF overall (due to how hard it pushes that AF system) and higher burst speeds, I find it hard to consider that 2x price tag worth it in the end. I would love to hear from others as to why an enthusiast should spend $3000 more for the 1DX2 over the 5D4? ;)

For a working photographer making it their career to be prepared for any situation, I could see that $3000 as being an insurance policy, but for the person just wanting to shoot some games, family events, and life around them from time to time, surely there is a better use for that $3000, like perhaps more glass? We always say glass above body here on POTN don't we? How about some good lighting equipment too? Or a vacation using that 5D4 to capture the moments?

Having the 7D2 coupled with the 5D4 is awesome, they are so similar in function, which means I can pull either out and know exactly how to set it and use it. As both are now Wifi (using the W-E1 on the 7D2), I can shoot remotely with my phone and download pics and send them out. They complement each other very, very well, and where one cannot quite get the reach on something, the other can. Plus I can use some very good EFS glass on the 7D2. As an enthusiast, having 2 options with different glass options is a nice perk.

Here is a sample ISO 25600 out of camera JPG, small crop, with just a quick once-over with NR and sharpening from the 5D4. I would show you pics of Benny, but now that the Pacers have bought up this franchise that I shoot, Chicago marketing material like Benny isn't allowed here for 1/2 time shows. :D

Last summer, I went through a similar decision. I was shooting a 70D and 7D2. I kept watching the 1DX2 thread, and the photos were just "better" in almost every way. I traded my 7D2 and a 300 2.8 II (and a couple other items) to get the 1DX2 for $900. A couple months later, I was ready to get a refurbished 6D as my 2nd body; but my wife told me to get the 5D4. So I did. The 1DX2 and 5D4 are both are excellent cameras. My personal preference is the 1DX2, but it's close. I normally have the 100-400 II on the 1DX2, and either the 24-105 f/4L or 16-35 f/4L IS on the 5D4. I take both cameras with me, and shoot both on most of my outings. However, if I only take one body, it always ends up being the 1DX2. I don't miss the 7D2 at all. Yes, there are shots I can't take anymore because I don't have the crop factor. I'm fine with that. I'm very satisfied with the changes I made, and I expect to keep my current equipment for many years to come.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.
