Dear Board,

I found a good used 50mm f1.8 Mark 1 lens and I would like to get a hood for it.

I don't need a genuine Canon NOS hood, I'll be happy with a knock off but in researching the correct hood I get a couple of different numbers that show up in the search. The most common is the ES-65 III which also fits the 90mm f2.5 macro. But I also get the ES-62 and the ES-65.

Can anyone who has this lens tell me which is the correct lens hood for the original 50mm f1.8? If they all work with no issues and you know that I'd appreciate knowing that too. And if you think a 52mm diameter rubber lens hood will do the job let me know that too.

Thanks in advance.

ES-65 III (though the es-65 and es-65 II should be the same hood, just older)

Dear Gremlin,

The proof has been delivered. I received confirmation that new model hood also fits.

Thank you,

Regards,

I would avoid using the ES-62.

Yes, the ES-62 hood fits, but keep in mind that it is really a clumsy filter thread adapter and an ES-62 hood. (62-L 52mm screw in adapter with ES-62 hood that clips onto the adapter)

Some third party sellers have a one-piece ES-62 that screws into the 52mm filter threads but can not be reversed for storage.

The ES-65 I, II or III is really the best option. The EW-65 hood also fits but is a little shallower and the ET-65 fits without vignetting but can not be reversed for storage because it is too large.

My ES-65 has flocking (fuzz) inside and my ES-65 II has no flocking. The ES-65 III also has flocking according to what I have read online.

The correct lens hood for the 50mm f/1.8 MkI is the ES-65. I bought my Mark I long after it was discontinued and I thought getting the correct hood in decent condition would be almost impossible. But unbelievably just a few weeks after buying the lens a brand new boxed example appeared on eBay from Germany! So, they are still around, you just have to be in the right place at the right time I suppose!

I can confirm that it does have flocking.

I too would stay away from the ES-62. It's a nice hood for the 50STM but the es-65 (1,2, or 3) is just a better option for the original ef 50mm f 1.8.

The 52mm threads on the ES-62 won't fit the 49mm filter threads on the 50mm STM.

The ES-68 is the correct hood for the 50mm STM.
