My friend had the rear element on his 1.4 just randomly fall out while in his camera bag, is this an easy fix, like DIY possible? Or does it have to be sent to Canon for repair?

As suggested, it could be cheaper to replace with a third party con, but until you ask you'll never know. Curious as to how it just "fell out" tho??? I'll assume its an older version as you haven't gone the warranty route?

If your friend finds the circlip in the bottom of his bag, it looks fairly simple to put back in... some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
