It's become a problem in recent days. And problem may be an overstatement: really it's just an irritant. If folks report it as soon as they see it, the system and the mods deal with it pretty quickly.

But in the last 4 days, I have visited 219 different threads. And I have not seen a single item of SPAM - absolutely zero. Hence, I have trouble understanding why others are seeing it so much lately and I have seen none whatsoever.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

The NEW POSTS page...........I cannot imagine that I would ever have an interest in using this as a way to negotiate the POTN site. There is no categorical organization by subject matter - just a messed up assortment of things ordered by nothing more than the time in which items were posted. No, thank you.

I often use it to catch up on what's happened since my last visit, and it works quite well for me. The more forums you've filtered out, the faster you can scan the list in New & Followed Posts and choose what you want to see.

Filtered out??? No! I want to see ALL of POTN!

I think that I have actually visited threads in every single one of the sub-forums, without exception. Somewhat regularly, too.

I can't imagine that there is any part of POTN that I do not want to be aware of, and visit, on a regular basis.

Since the current rash of spam seems to all be in Korean, can't all posts that predominately contain non UTF-8 characters be quarantined pending moderator review?

Tom. if you have no threads filtered out, you can use the New Posts page to see ALL the latest posts on ALL threads.

I believe its the easiest way to see the latest word on everything. It works for me as I don't need posts categorized, I want to see them in chronological order.

Once again, different strokes - as AMASS works for all of us.

I live in 2 screens each day.

1) FYEO, it shows me the latest updates to all threads I have read. I only wish I could sort by last posting date, and not by the date I last visited the thread.

2) New Posts, it shows me all the other new threads I haven't pulled up yet, and I visually scan through that list, looking for either interesting titles, or threads in the boards I frequent most.

3 reports (by different members) as spam and the posts are hidden automatically if the poster is a new(ish) member. The only thing missing now is hiding of the thread titles in such cases.

Thanks for explaining that Pekka.

When I saw all the SPAM coming in the other morning I wasn't sure whether I should "Report" all of them - especially as there were numerous from the same login. I was sure there would be others that would report them before me.

But then I thought, "what the heck" so I hit the report button on some of them that were still showing up. Turns out that was the right thing to do based on your "3 reports" post.

Great feature.

It would be nice to have a one click spam reporting option though, perhaps?

I had to select forums to follow because POTN is just too big. One needs a few hours each day to feed and clothe oneself.

Here's the advantage of using New & Followed, instead of the index page, as an entry point. Suppose I eagerly await new photos of towel racks, but curtain rods leave me cold. On the index page, the Household Goods Mounted on Walls forum shows only the latest post. That post was made 1 minute ago in the Curtain Rods thread. (I'm using an imaginary example to avoid offending the OPs and fans of real threads.) To learn whether there's anything new in the Towel Racks thread, I must open the HGMoW forum. Maybe a new Towel Racks image appeared 1 hour ago, maybe not.

New & Followed shows new posts since my last visit, by thread title, not by forum. If there's a new Towel Racks post, the thread title is boldfaced whether or not a Curtain Rods post came since then. I can skip Curtain Rods and go straight to Towel Racks, and I don't need the HGMoW page.

This week it'd be nice, but most of the time a Posted in Wrong Forum button would be more helpful. That's the category I use the most.

I believe its the easiest way to see the latest word on everything.

I am not terribly interested in seeing the latest on everything. I am interested in just about everything, but not necessarily everything current.

The majority of my time here on POTN is spent digging thru the archives, and reading threads that are several years old. There is a lot of good conversation from back in 2006, 2008, 2011, etc. I like reading a lot of POTN threads from back in those days - I like the personalities and the cliques that were formed back then.

I am forever PMing and emailing and phone calling people that were very active on POTN back in those years, encouraging them to get involved again........but to little avail.

Just this week, I've had some great conversations with MDJACK (Mark), the FlyingPhotog (Jay), and Sindri Skulason. All are doing quite well and are still very active, photographically! Unfortunately, none of them seem to be terribly interested in returning to their former levels of activity here on POTN. But I will still "live in the past" and spend a lot of my time reading those old threads from days gone by.

Many attempts to connect with TheHoff, for years, have resulted in nothing but failure. I miss the Hoff-? But at least I can go back and read his old posts.......that's better than nothing, I suppose.

Back to this threads' topic, perhaps I am not encountering SPAM because much of my POTN activity involves the reading and reviewing of very old material, and the spammers tend to start new threads? Just a hypothesis.
