It would be nice to have a one click spam reporting option though, perhaps?

That could actually be a good shortcut to have., at least with new posters.

The only caveat is that it would make it easier to abuse. Sometimes it's wiser to take a breath and count 1-2-3 before reporting.

Does the site use a captcha mechanism for new signups? If not, take a look at Google Recaptcha. It's very easy to add to a site. It uses a mechanism that requires human perception and defies bots.

We use our own custom captcha ("The AMASS Captcha"), you can try it out with "Send feedback to staff" link. So far it (or the registration process) has not been cracked by bots.

3 reports (by different members) as spam and the posts are hidden automatically if the poster is a new(ish) member. The only thing missing now is hiding of the thread titles in such cases.

Which also means, if you see spam, report it? I'll report the newest ones but if it's more than a few minutes old I tend to think someone else must have and not inundate the mods with the same post being reported over and over, but if it takes three reports to drop it from view then report all you see to clear up the users' views?

Edit: I see WaltA already had the same question.

BTW, Pekka, this is still the best forum software I've ever seen. :) Wish I could have this spread over the internet instead of the junk so many of them use!

This is still an excellent and extraordinary forum. I'm one of those who looks at "New posts" just because I'm interested in the different things people post. (I confess I've also blocked 4 forums, related to birds. Many people like birds. I do too. Baked, roasted,...)

I'm also one of those who will report the spammers. I caught one of the waves of spam a couple nights ago and reported it. Mostly this place is super clean. I was a co-founder of a forum a number of years ago (not photography related), and there's considerable diligence required to keep ahead of the spammers. Given the size of PotN - membership, threads, postings, et al - I'm shocked to see so little spam. Prior to a couple days ago, I don't recall the last time I reported spam. I'd guess it's been months.

Thank you, Pekka for keeping this place good!

Now a different set of threads.... Perhaps something could be done automatically when somebody posts the same thread title more than twice? Auto flag as a spam account and all threads until a mod can investigate?

There seems to be an easy solution for eliminating this specific type of SPAM.

Here are a couple of excerpts from the POTN rules:

Given the fact that these rules are in place, couldn't we just have code written that would not allow any text that is not a part of the western English alphabet? That would seem to be a way to eliminate the type of SPAM that you have cited here.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I have seen (a very few times) where two members used a foreign language to talk to each other.
How about if the code just read the title?

And WTH is the point of all this Korean spam? Don't they know that nobody will bother to read it? ; D

I would suspect that very few people on this forum would be able to read it, let alone try to read it.
