Looking at the specs on the 77D and the T7i they are almost the same camera as all Rebels have 1/4000 shutter speed and step up to the 80D or higher and get the 1/8000 shutter.
They should of made 1 new camera and called it the T777iD save money and make 1 not 2. Just thinking

The model numbering is still very odd, and is inconsistent still though. They announced the T7i, and the 77D (T7s). Why rename one and not the other? It seems that consumers were confused about the differences between the Rebel T6i and T6s, so they want to stop using that nomenclature.

So the next high end rebel is the 78D, then 79D, then what? The 80D, which is the successor to the 70D, already exists.

The xxD line cannot continue down its road either, because 2 generations later will hit the 100D.

The main rebel line has the same problem too, but farther out. Once the 990D is replaced, you cannot go with the 1000D.

The prosumer model line of xD, again, has the same problem. You can only have an 8D and 9D in the future, but not a 10D.

Canon has put themselves into a naming bind, and did it again here. By making numbers mean something in the past by number of digits in that line, they are approaching the inevitable model collision.

.

It doesn't have to make sense, maybe the confusion is aimed at keeping users to forget the past and only remember the present. The XXD line up broke during the 50D to 60D, nobody really cares.

No, the 77D is the successor to the Rebel T6S, but they don't want to keep the same moniker, so they chose 77D. They have 3, maybe 4, Rebel lines. The dumbed down series, the normal Rebel line, and a souped up Rebel, and if they continue the SL1, a mini Rebel.

I wonder if the xxD series is about done. They will continue that as the advanced Rebel but charge as much as the xxD line.

I wonder the same about xxD. Perhaps the 90D and 7D Mark III will meld together into a single offering. The choice between the current 80D and the 7D2 is almost a toss up in many respects,

Actually, the 77D is a direct replacement for the t6s, which was the more prosumer oriented version of the t6i. Why they're giving it a two digit designation is beyond me unless they're doing a realignment of their model offerings. They may be trying to raise it out of the entry level Rebel line as a compact version of their more full featured semi pro xxD bodies.

You seem to know what you are talking about...at least you know the T6s is higher in the pecking order than the T6i !
Do you have any insight into just WHAT distinguishes a 'more prosumer oriented' camera vs. the 'less prosumer oriented' camera, in the specific case of the T7s vs T7i?

The difference with the 77D is mostly the top LCD and a few additional features which cross over the divide between the traditional Rebel line and the xxD and xD lines. I believe the 77D will have 45 focus points like the 80D. Its mostly about handling, and somewhat about perception. The current 80D and the 7D Mark II each have dozens of professional features that the Rebels have traditionally lacked, like micro focus adjustment and AF zones as well as many others. Rebels have also lacked the rear adjustment wheel of the xxD series plus the joystick of the various xD bodies I don't know if the 77D will have a rear wheel, but I suspect it may not due to the lack of real estate needed to accommodate one..

Thx, from the recent released statements from Canon, I did glean a bit of the 77D vs. T7i; but I was curious specifically about T7s vs. T7i ...?

I think the new Rebel T7i also has 45 focus points and AF zones. I have the T6i, which does have AF zones. I went from the T1i to 5Dii to the 6D and have only known the simplified focus system. Recently I purchased a refurbished T6i kit from Canon and was pretty amazed at what it can do. Paired with the STM lens has really impressed me. I love where Canon is going with their Rebel series and EF-s lens. I am a 63 year old female with a passion for photography yet the costs and weights of full frame equipment and L lens have led me back to the Rebel series. So I am excited about both new cameras.

I say "Bring it on, Canon!";-)a:-)

I'd rather have an 80d than a 77d. The xxd line is built better. Although, I think the older xxd models are built even better than the new xxd models. Hold a 50d, 60d next to a 70d or 80d.

TeamSpeed wrote in post #18275459 (external link)
But they are both xxD... ;) This means the 77D build is equal to the 80D then, right?

Yep, I think we might have to differentiate between the xxD and the x0D. Crazy, ain't it?

But why the '77D' moniker, when it is not as large as a 70D or 80D? They couldda had T70 T71, T72...to T79, then go up to the T8n series next.
The 'T7i' could have been 'T73' to allow room for a base model 'T70' (aka 'T7')and the 77D might have been better dubbed the 'T77' so we knew it was based on the shrunken body of the Rebel!

Wilt, I have no idea.

I was only commenting on the confusion of using the erstwhile xxD designation in light of the introduction of the 77D. However, I speculated earlier in the thread that perhaps Canon is moving toward static model numbers and using "Mark" designations to differentiate updates to those models; as with the 7D, 5D, 1D and 1DX.

It's the 9000D in some parts of the world.

IMHO it's the M6 that caught my eye.

....And wow, do you want to talk about name structures? The M6 is the Jr. to the M5, which is better than the M1-M3,. 3 steps forward one step back,. it's all so confusing!

anyway, the M6 will cost less than the M5, but it comes in silver and taking a cue from Fuji and Olympus, it has nice dials ;)

Michgirl, you and I must be related! :) I am about your age, and my photography path is somewhat like yours. I currently have a 7DmII but bought a Rebel because I like the lighter weight and sometimes I just don't feel like dealing with all the extra the 7DmII offers.

Looking forward to seeing more of your posts and hearing your photography stories.

Sounds like we both have taken the same paths for the same reasons. Currently we are on a six week vacation in Southern California and I have only taken the 6D out twice. Everything else has been T6i. I am considering getting the 10-18 STM lens for it and start using it for all of my landscape pictures.

I also look forward to hearing about your experiences and which direction you go with your new Rebel.

On the Canon website I compared the specs for the 77D with those for the 80D, I found that:

The 77D has a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 vs 1/8000 for the 80D. I find 1/8000 occasionally useful when shooting an f/1.4 lens in daylight.
The 77D has a slightly smaller sensor, 22.3x14.9 vs 22.5x15.0mm for the 80D. This is probably not an important difference.
The 77D has lower viewfinder magnification, 0.82x with a 50mm lens vs 0.95x for the 80D. To me this is moderately important.
The 77D has slightly lower viewfinder coverage, 95% vs 100% for the 80D (according to imagesource.com.)
The 77D has expanded ISO to 51200, vs 25600 for the 80D, (according to imagesource.com - I could not find anything about this on the Canon website.)

The only things that would tempt me to buy the 77D instead of the 80D are the higher ISO (if this is true) and the lower price. But I would find the control layout difficult when switching back and forth from the 70D to the 77D. I don't think I will buying either one soon, but if I do, it will probably be the 80D.

I'd be more concerned about the comparitive noise present up to ISO 12800 rather than by which one has the highest ISO specification. My 7D2 supports an ISO of 51200, but I would never even consider shooting above 12800, and I very rarely shoot that high. How the noise is controlled at lower settings is much more important in my opinion.
