32g of rams would be plenty, that's my new standard and is affordable. you should be fine with mid level graphic card. say 3060 or the new intel arc.

off the shelf... I've been ok with dell. not a fan of hp and big box's 'custom' computer. I would take a look at nzxt's custom build if you want to get a best buy custom computer. can't go wrong with an i7-13700 if you are going for intel.

Yeah, ram is so cheap you might as well go 32gb if budget isn’t an issue. 13700 is super fast but even a 13600 is going to be some serious overkill for video.

GPU even a GTX 1650 or a 2060 would suffice.

As for who to buy from, a lot of that will depend on location. NZXT or similar builders are a better bet than Dell, HP, etc though they’ll all be “fine”. I’d look at well regarded local “gaming pc” companies, the use better non proprietary components which will make future upgrades much easier.

Since you folks brought up GPUs I thought I’d share some recent experience …

If you run dual 10bpc monitors get a 3060 instead of the 2060. The 2060 supports multiple monitors but only one in 10bpc mode (only allows 10bpc over DP, I believe because it uses an older version of HDMI, so that port doesn’t support 10bpc).

The RTX2060 and RTX3060 have almost the same power consumption. Power consumption is a lot higher for the 3060Ti, and higher cards, so higher operating costs for no real advantage if you’re not gaming or doing tons of video editing.

Also, I’d recommend a card that lets the fans go to 0 RPM when not under load. The RTX2060 PH (Phoenix version?) doesn’t.

interesting. didn't know that about the bpc. for me, as long as the display shows I am fine :P but thanks, I'll look at it if I"m going to be picky on graphics.

That was true 10~15 years ago but their current PC (at least laptops) seem pretty rock solid. We use HP laptops at work for both out day to day PCs as well as lab PCs. Out of my lab alone (telephony development and testing) we have had very few failures out of a sample size of several hundred. (about 180 day to day PCs doing office type work and about 250 or so lab PCs. We are slowly switching to Lenovo but that's because they gave us a fantastic deal on PCs company wide. They also seen pretty good but have had more failures.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Yeah, my last company moved from Lenovo to HP, and then my current uses Dell. They’ve been solid, I just really don’t like the mass pre builds for home use where upgrades are likely.

It’s interesting to hear you’ve had more failures with Lenovo, they were always the “business class” but I’ve heard from more than one person lately talk about issues from issues with their custom firmware/bios to hardware failures.

It seems that if you have a solid one, it works pretty flawlessly but we have had quite a few failures out of the box and failures within the first few days. Way back we had Dell and those were solid.

Hi Omar and ALL

Happy New year

Allow me to answer.

I brought only the Sony A7R4 with 24-105 mm lens, 24 was not wide enough so I have to resort to panorama, hand eel shots at Fatima, Douro River Porto and vertical pan for the astronomical clock in Prague.

To start with, KLM changes in schedule made my trip longer it was LAS- AMS- LIS, became ALS-LAX-JFK to LIS, and back was Prague- AMS to LAS, became Prague -AMS to LHR to LAS- Heathrow was bad.

We got the covid in Porto or Lisbon, revenge travelers filled up planes, airports , tourists sites and fancy restaurants, thousands were at the mercado Rubiero in Lisbon, watching the FIFA match, even in Porto some of th nice restaurants were full, crowded tourists sites, even when it was raining and snowing

We came prepared. I brought Paxlovid, on the first day of positive test ( I brought 8 test) I started the 30 pills 5 day regiment, my wife tested positive two day later and took her paxlovid then, I bough IR Thermometer, Oximeter, BP machine, and even antibiotics 6 day pack, which we took when colds continued even when we tested negative after 15 days.

I was angry after the isolation of 35 months and wearing KN96 masks, caning a few times during the flight, we got infected.

We took precautions so as not to infect hotel employees, TAP , Portugal Air lost our luggage from Lisbon to Prague, I was not worried airbag showed me where they were. All our meds were in the hand carried.

Fatima, it was raining hard, we left Lisbon the previous day and Lisbon was flooded with landslides worst in 100 years. 7 image pano
In Prague it was snowing with slushy snow on the road, 5 image vertical pano astronomical clock

Enjoy your travels , let me know when you will hit the Philippines, maybe Monkey can meet up with you, maybe even moi.

Bought my R5 August 2021, and RF 85 f1.2 after that. I have not been able to use them much, just took a few pictures inside the house and the backyard just to check. Just like when I bought my 6D about 10 years ago.

I have not been very active with my photography due to life changes, and being in Az, not much to photograph around me. Of course I can travel a few hours from home, but unable to do it. One more thing from keeping me away from my camera is my ageing eye sight, I hate wearing glasses.

I have been busy with mountain biking with friends though.

There’s plenty to photograph here in AZ! Just head to your nearest mountain preserve.

At the very least you can take pictures of your bike ;)

Circling back on this post, what cables are those? I finally decided on a PSU so I’m going to order some white cables. Leaning towards the Cablemod Modmesh white for a clean look, but trying to explore all my options.

thanks for the write up Tony. Glad you and wife was fine after the two weeks. These days, I just take covid as a regular cold, lots of people I would hear would have a positive reading but it is just light and minor. It's not what it used to be when it was new. Does this change your mind for traveling? My brother and his wife got covid on their trip from Florida, they got very sick and tested positive. We saw them before they got their test done and we were fine, we didnt catch their cold/covid.

Were you happy with the sony setup for your trip? (aside from needing a wider lens)

I was planning on doing sony with 24-70 and a 35 1.4, along with the m10+50mm for savannah. maybe I should also bring 16-24 instead of the 35.

Maybe that can get Martin to come back and complain about bikes haha.

But yea.. there's this guy in the leica thread who would post pictures of his ride and bike. I would also think there's plenty place in AZ for pictures. But I get you, I can say the same about here in southern california, i dont have much place to go to for pictures, but there are plenty of places to go, i'm just too dang lazy and not adventurous haha
