Hello,

I am looking for a laptop that I can travel with to do editing on, both photo and video. I am not trying to spend a ton, I am having a hard time finding a better deal than this

any other recommendations?

Thank you

Some things to consider...

Acer laptops are notoriously known to be very difficult as far as user upgrades. This means that should you decide to upgrade the 256 GB SSD to something larger, you have a real chore on your hands. An example procedure is outlined at http://laptopmedia.com …otos-and-upgrade-options/ (external link). In contrast, I just replaced the inverter board in a Lenovo where the LCD had failed and it was a 10 minute procedure (and $3 part). I have also replaced the hard drive on the same machine, one screw needs to be removed/replaced. 5 minutes of actual work, about an hour for Samsung software to clone the old drive. Just worth checking should you pursue an upgrade in the future.

Another thing typical of Acers that seem to be good deals is they seldom include an optical drive; and I don't see one listed on the Amazon page your link takes me to. I didn't check, but that might be another $50 to $75 should you want the ability to read/write to DVD's and or CD's.

You might want to explore your options with a Lenovo off their outlet. As an example see http://outlet.lenovo.com …s/20H5CTO1WW-PF0JGL1A/445 (external link). Dell also has an outlet. You can even purchase "refurbished" off these sources, something I did many years ago. I got a laptop that I could not tell from new.

Example refurb...http://outlet.lenovo.com …&audience=445&GroupID=445 (external link)

Thank you for the reply,

The optical drive to me is not important I very rarely use/burn DVD's or CD's these days and if I do need to I have a dedicated desktop at home that can handle that.

As for the upgradablity of Acer I agree with that, however all of the reviews from multiple sources of this specific laptop, not Acer in general, rave about how easy this Laptop is to upgrade. I do know there is an extra Sata port in this one with plenty of space to add a second hard drive.

Thanks

Review the procedure at http://laptopmedia.com …otos-and-upgrade-options/ (external link). Not sure I would use the term "easy".

Hmm I have built many desktops but have not really messed around much with laptop hardware and disassembly. So I may be a bit ignorant, are most laptops easier than that to get into?

Also I am not completely sold on this laptop so if anyone has any other suggestions on similar spec'd computers or better, for a good deal I am open to them. This one just seemed like good hardware for the money.

Thanks

Compare the ACER procedure to the Thinkpad E560 procedure at http://laptopmedia.com …otos-and-upgrade-options/ (external link).

This of course could be a mute point. I happen to be one to do my own upgrades.

I like doing my own upgrades to on just about anything I can, but to be honest I don't mind the extra hassle in this case.

Well you seem irregardless to be set on the Acer. Can you define the criteria you seek that makes the Acer in your mind better than some of the other laptops in the marketplace. Obviously I haven't hit on anything with the recommendations (ThinkPAd and Dell) that I made. The original post reflects price perhaps a major consideration and both of what I suggested are in the same price range.

I use an 11" Macbook Air standard out-of-the-box. It has a 128 gig SSD drive that holds the software. I keep my images and Catalog on a 1 tb external SSD Drive. This makes LightRoom CC run as fast as if it were on my Macbook Pro at home. I make sure to backup the external drive (Catalog and images) to my 8 tb backup drive at home every time I use on the Pro.

The screen is a bit small, but using the "F" command to show Full Screen helps me view my progress while in Develop mode.

I am not dead set on the Acer, I have just not seen any other laptop that has the same or better hardware for that good of a price. The 2 negative points you brought up while valid, just don't matter to me as much as performance to cost ratio. I am more than willing to go a bit more expensive if its worth it.

I know I am little late to reply to this thread but I have found a very good laptop for your requirements.

Checkout Lenovo Ideapad 510 (Price - $729.99) - https://www.amazon.com …80SV0058US/dp/B01LNOECPA/ (external link)

This laptop offers better hardware than that Acer laptop and costs just $30 extra than its price.

Specifications -

12GB DDR4 RAM
256GB SSD
NVidia GeForce GTX 940MX 4GB Graphics
15.6" LED-Lit, FHD, IPS display, 1920x1080 resolution
Windows 10

I saw the Acer laptop that you are eyeing. Acer is actually a good brand, I can say coz I have one. I got this Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Full HD Laptop (external link). I must say that this is a very powerful laptop and really fast. Specs are follows:

Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5 GHz Processor (6 MB Cache)
16 GB DDR3 RAM
1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 256 GB Solid-State Drive
17.3-Inch (1920 x 1080) Screen, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M

You may want to check this laptop that I am suggesting so you'll have more choices. Good luck!

I'm also looking for something similar. I recently thought I'd found it when I bought a Dell Inspiron 13-5000 series but despite it having an SSD and 16gb i7 processor I found it unusable with Lightroom where it made the screen randomly flicker. I suspect some hardware issues but all tests passed etc. Needless to say it's going back and the search is on again.
