For $350, I couldn't refuse jumping into my first strobe Here's a shot of one of my ankle biters with the Rovelight 600B. This is with a 3 stop Hoya ND filter in afternoon sun. The idea being to underexpose the ambient light but not have to use a half a dozen speedlites to expose the subject. Buying a strobe is a lot like buying a camera, which is a lot like getting married... You make the big initial investment, but then you spend half your paycheck on accessories for it.
I've probably spent close to an equal amount of money on the Cheetah Boom, some extra sandbags, and my first ocotobox. Probably will order a larger one soon. Keep this in mind when you budget!
There seems to be some struggle with using the 3 stop ND filter and grabbing consistent focus. Looking closely this image seems to be off but others were tack sharp. 1/100sec @f/2.8 ISO100. 5dIII w/70-200mm f/2.8 II. For this reason alone I may go the HSS route and ditch the ND filter. Ain't nobody got time for soft photos.
All in all I'm really happy to be able to shoot shallow in bright daylight to blur out distracting backgrounds.
A big thank you to Wise Imaging aka "MalVeauX" on here for spending way too much time helping my clueless self learn the ropes. Much appreciated, Marty!
