Check the Tamron for compatibility before proceeding.

Also with the Tamron G1 version, which I think this is, is having VC that works while panning important? Although there was a firmware fix that sorted the VC feedback issue while panning with the lens, it did it by turning the system off for you. The Sigma on the other hand has a full mode 2 setting for use when panning. The other advantage of the Sigma is that it is fully compatible with the dock, and unlike other contemporary lenses you get the complete set of custom controls and the full range of MFA 16 settings. To get those functions in the Tamron, both the full VC operation and the customisation options you need to move up to the much more expensive G2 version.

Here in the UK I think it is a much simpler choice since both the Tamron G1 and the Sigma C are exactly the same price; £699 including tax (20%) that would equate to an advertised price in the US of about $730.

Wow! The Sig is selling for $989 across the board here in the US. Got a favorite shop out that way you could share? I don't know if I want to go grey, but its fun to look.

Just an additional consideration in lens choice, that can matter for some photographers but not for others...

  • What direction do you turn the manual focus ring toward Infinity on the considered lens, vs. what most/all of your other existing lenses do?
  • What direction do you turn the zoom ring toward Longest FL on the considered lens, vs. what most/all of your other existing lenses do?

You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php
Canon dSLR system, Olympus OM 35mm system, Bronica ETRSi 645 system, Horseman LS 4x5 system, Metz flashes, Dynalite studio lighting, and too many accessories to mention

That's probably the vagaries of the currency market - manufacturers tend to do it by buying currency hedges for, say, a year and not resetting prices every time the markets change. The pound went down last year after the Brexit vote and Canon probably hasn't re-evaluated their pricing.

WEX (external link) is my local camera retailer, and they are one of the bigger independent retailers in the UK too. This is where my Sigma 150-600 came from. The link is direct to the lens. I don't know what they do with exports, since if they are shipping it to the US it might be possible for you to get the 20% VAT back directly too. Some stores are set up to do export and can help you with that. Others aren't and you might have to claim back the VAT yourself. They are required by EU/UK law to display prices with tax.

Yes tax free export would be 20% less than this price or £582.50!

Both are compatible with 6D, the SIGMA is a few years newer, most sites give it better rating in optics to the SIGMA, and it certainly has better AF and OS. I love mine.

There is a newer version of the Tamron called G2, but that's a slightly pricier model than the one you specify.

It is very unusual to be cheaper in the UK than the US for electronics.
