Hi all!

I have never really liked how selective color on b&w subjects looks. Having said that, when I was processing one image, I thought that it may not look too bad. I do think, though, that it takes attention away from the main focus area of the photo.

Thoughts?

Quick question, is it a no at the lens flare or at the original photo as well?

One option would be do not completely de-saturate, leave a subdued color on the image yet make the red lens pop as in the first. This makes it not so obvious.

I have kind of the same response to selective color. It just screams.....'I'm an amateur'......'I just got my camera yesterday...see what I made?'

.

The original black & white photo is wonderful.

The version with the selective colour added is, well........let's just say that it is "not wonderful".

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

No forgiveness needed!

Personally, I am glad that you tried this, and I am glad that you presented it here to seek feedback. Just because most people don't like something, doesn't mean that it doesn't have merit. Nor does it necessarily mean that it "doesn't work".

There could be instances in which your selective colour version would be very appropriate.....such as, say.........well, say that it was a photo used in a how-to manual, and you used the selective colour to illustrate which button should be pushed - the selective colour is something that everybody could understand, regardless of their native language!

.

I had a bit of time to kill in Norwich the other week, and wandered into a commercial art gallery. I was stunned to find a series of "selective colour" paintings! They were cityscapes, one was the classic British red telephone box, the other a London bus, so what we would probably consider the very bottom of the barrel. They were roughly 30×20 in oils, and selling for about £2500 each. I bet you would struggle to get similar photographic images into a gallery at all.
