Heh! This is to me a funny discussion!

I'd say, sure, if you try to juggle around all the various features of modern cameras, and heck, indlude "Smart Phone" cameras in the mix! I myself don't have/use a "Smart Phone", but I've tried to help some folks in figuring out the "stuff", and gosh, I myself get a bit mixed up!

But it can go farther back, I mean, when I've gotten and used P&S cameras or some of the compact cameras when you could throw in features, but think about it: How many P&S users can you recall who just get confused about wanting to get "better shots"?

but for most of us here, we have settled into the more advanced DSLR genre. We typically did this because cameras became available that offered stuff that we really wanted in our photography, so it became "natural" to grab one!

So, as to this thread, well sure, all the featured can add up to more than we can quickly/automatically grasp and use, but hey, we still got/get what we wanted, is that not true? And then, there are some like my daughter -- a bunch of years ago I bought her a Rebel kit. At the time, I was happily shooting manual stuff with my bodies and lenses, but my daughter insisted that she work with the Auto modes with her camera. And, you know what, she has a good "eye" for her images, both with the composition/shot, and also, she has an "eye" for processing her images. She has used Photoshop Elements as well as Lightroom, and you know what? she produces some very interesting results, even some out of shots that I have taken, and she has no complaints about her "cheap little camera"!

But seriously, I think we tend to take some of these subjects Waay Too Seriously"!

Truth be told, I could shoot most of what I do with an 40 year old manual-everything film camera. I like camera stuff, so I own a 6D, 80D, and 1DIV. They are all overkill. Next question. :)

.It's not that I am "too much photographer", for I am anything but that. It is merely that what I want, in terms of print size and fine detail, is more that what is possible with today's gear. So it's not about my skill at all, it's just about what I want my clients and myself to be able to put up on the walls.

.

I was joking, more poking fun at you than trying to praise your skill :-D

Unfortunately, not even the $45,000 Hassy comes close to meeting my needs or desires:

Funny (in an amusing way), Tom...you and I are polar opposites.
I am fine with 1.5fps, but not at $45k admission ticket price

Then you and I are also polar opposites!

If the Hassy were mine, within a couple of months it would be dinged, scratched, encrusted with bits of mud, and have tree bark wedged into some of its nooks and crannies..........and I am not exaggerating one bit! .However, it would still function perfectly, and I would get a lot of use out of it.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

OHHH, the horror!!!!!!!LOL Sheesh..........I usually keep the old camera bodies when I upgrade for the purposes of getting down and dirty, saving and savoring the new camera for more safer shoots.........

Truth be known I would have to.....win the lottery, sell a body part, have a rich relative who I didn't know anything about die, or win a beauty contest :p

I can get video out of my 1D3, but only if it's tethered...
too much weight, yes.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I once had a P&S camera that was wayyyyy too much camera for me. I spent more time lost in menus with that camera, only to finally find the setting I needed after the moment had passed, and then not be able to find the setting again to change it back. That thing was far to complicated so I decided to give up and get an SLR instead.

It's only too much camera if you think your shots are much better than they are.

For instance, I turn up to my son's lacrosse games with a 70-200 II and 400 DO II, but I made it very clear to the team that I am not even an amateur sports photographer. I didn't buy those lenses to take photos of my kids sports, never mind the fact I have never taken LAX photos before.

I have some bird shots that I have printed and hanging around the house that I took with the DO though.

I have a work colleague who has a Leica that he raves about and his 'super' 50-150 f2.8 lens etc.. and quite frankly his photos are not good. He claims they are SOOC when they look over-processed. He would be much better off shooting film and having it processed 'normally'.

I know someone else who has a Leica because he likes the ergonomics and can afford it and thinks he can get better shots than with his phone.

So I think it depends on more than whether you use all the features of the camera or equipment.

I see a lot of people going after too much camera.. They want to spend 2x as much for a camera (i.e. 5d mk3) that for their purposes will do the same thing as the cheaper one, perhaps not even as well as the cheap one (6D)!

I wanted a 5D Mk 4, but that was because of the focus compensation. If I keep shooting in studio, that'll be irrelevant and I'll want a 5Ds R so I can do tighter crops while still getting large prints.

I have too much Photoshop. Is anyone truly proficient at utilizing every feature? But that's another thread.

It's more like cameras nowadays have TOO MUCH BS. All I wanna do is make photographs: manual mode is more than enough for that.

Extra features can become a distraction to a beginner
