a quick search, of the rules and in the lounge, didn't reveal anything, so just exactly what constitutes a ban on here?? i see people have been banned on various parts of the forum, but unless the offending posts have been deleted by the mods, there's no real indication of what's happened. can anyone enlighten me, please???

It's all in https://photography-on-the.net/forum/rules.php

We do not make ban reasons public, usually. It is a personal "punishment" and the ban reason is always passed to the member in question.

We have full report logs and notes from 2001, so a ban might be a result of accumulating long term issues, not just the latest "minor" one.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I figured the offending details must be deleted as the remaining posts seemed a little innocuous :-)

The posts belonging to a 'banned' person might indeed have tremendous informational value to those reading the posts, but the banning offense might have been more 'administrative' in nature, such as opening up two different named accounts by the same individual.

I have always assumed that most permanent bans are the result of someone opening up an additional account. I think this way because so many of the people who have been banned permanently were well-spoken, kind, helpful people who seldom engaged in any contentious conversations and who never discussed religion or politics. So with these good folks, it seems like the only thing left for them to get banned over would be the creation of another account.

I would appreciate it if anyone could confirm this for me, or set me straight if my premise is incorrect.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

insufferably pedantic. I can live with that.

I am well acquainted with one person who illustrates this in reality. He was banned for an extended period, but finally reinstated but never resumed posting here, as his interests had changed. He shall remain nameless. In fact, I had a 'hi howya doin' exchange with him just last month, but it has been 3 years since he hung around here routinely.
