Hey everyone, I'm finding it's getting so confusing to shop for paper this days with so many brands on the market so thought I pose the question that's probably been asked a millions times over. I have an Epson p800 and looking for a paper that's geared more towards landscape and B&W. I like to stay away from glossy.

Any suggestions on brands and type?

Thanks for you time!
Frank :-)

Start with Epson paper. Test a couple of different surfaces and weights and see what works best. Epson will likely have paper-printer profiles for you to download to help wth color management, or their various ABW printer driver controls will be geared toward working with their papers.

for what it's worth, I've had some photos - both color and black & white - printed on Fuji Deep Matte paper and they are absolutely stunning. I really kind of hate glossy paper though, even "lustre" is a bit too much for me.

Get a sample pack of different type of Epson papers and download the respective profiles and try out for yourself. Personally I love B&W on Epson Bamboo.

I haven't tried a ton of papers, but I've always been happy with Ilford.

I'd suggest Red River's Ultra pro satin and San Gabriel Baryta. I use an Epson 3880 and the provided paper profiles from RR.

I've tried a range of Canon, Epson, and Red River papers. Right now, my overall favorite is the Palo Duro Soft Gloss. Less finicky than the San Gabriel Baryta (which is beautiful).

Red River sells a sampler pack.

Some folks like Epson Ultra Premium Luster rather than gloss. Personally, I find that printing on Fine Art paper is more interesting than luster or gloss. Lately I've been using Epson Cold Press Bright on an Epson 3800 Pro. Check this link: ==> http://www.atlex.com …ck-8-5-x11-14-sheets.html (external link)

Alex is pretty much the cheapest place I've found for paper and ink. Good luck.

A lot of it can be "rule of thumb based on your own experience and preferences.

I myself tend away from "glossy" when it comes to lanscape/scenic/large prints. With that in mind, you can gaze the available formats, looking at things that might resemble "semi-gloss...

with that in mind, it's pretty important to get first-hand experience, getting prints of various types and sizes on various paper types. That is how you can line up experience with preferences!!!

That sounds awesome, Hogloff!

Might you post a link to a gallery, so that we can see these images or yours? After many years of nature & wildlife photography, I am starting to finally gain interest in large prints, and it would be great to see what it is that you are doing that you have even so successful with.

I've almost always printed on some sort of matte finish, but I've never really been bothered by glossy. I have a huge supply of luster canon paper now, though... that'll take a while to get through.

Here's a pretty good write-up on different finishes for photo prints:

It's the same as the prime rib problem. Sometimes you want some wonderful fresh fish. Another person may be a vegan.

I kind of always liked glossy, well at least when done well on a non coated fiber paper, when you needed to get the glazing machine out to get a good finish. I have to say that was one of the things I could never quite master. At least I never accidentally put RC paper in there, I think there would be a good chance of seriously damaging that chrome plate.

Another vote for Red River papers. I buy the pro satin and matte, been using them for about 8 years. Currently have the Epson R1900 and together they produce stunning results.
