Long stories short, show up to shoot some photos at a friend's birthday party this weekend. Pull out my camera, and all of a sudden my screen reads that my CF needs to be reformatted which can be done in the menu settings.

Proceed to do that, it now says the CF is unreadable.

Luckily, I always have a spare, but I'm curious if it is fixable or do I just have a $15 paperweight at this point.

Thanks!
- Dylan

Even if it is fixable, would you trust it now?

I would not.

You have a good point - I have just never had such a thing happen. Not sure if it is the brand, or quality, or what..

I appreciate the input nonetheless!

Sometimes a write error makes the card look "bad" BUT instead of re-formatting the card, you should use one of the many s/w utilities to extract all the good data and often repair the card so that it can be re-used. Then it can be properly reformatted if required. I would still try to plug it into your PC and run software to check the card and clean it. If it is still functional you can transfer it back to the camera for reformatting.
Cheers, Murray

Interesting - I will be sure to give it a try; luckily the card was empty so will not have to worry about recovering any past material!

Most likely not fixable. This sounds like the firmware of the CF is corrupted. It is not something you can fix at home. What brand and model? Some brands will replace it.

If its really only 8GB, trash it. A new one is $15:at Best Buy. But I'd consider moving up in size, 8 GB doesn't g far. What kind of camera?

Canon 40D, but I am currently in the market for a 6D which is why I was just looking to see if it was fixable as I would only be using the camera as a backup anyway.

8GB is plenty for a 40D,, Sandisk should have a warranty to cover it, if it is not too old.

I'd try a low lever format in the PC,. but I'd be leary of it even if that worked.

Are you certain that the card is a genuine SanDisk? If purchased from a reputable source it _should_ be legit but even Amazon has had problems with 3rd party vendors selling fakes and Ebay is rife with them. Hardly worth it but, if genuine, SanDisk should replace it.

6D wouldn't be able to use this CF card even if fixed - SD only

All too many moon ago, back in the days of a Canon G2!, a 128MB CF card failed on me in camera, and it failed many rescue attempts...it got relegated to duty for computers but not Canon digital cameras. It eventually got thrown in an idle memory stick bag that I keep in my desk

I just pulled it out (over 10 years after it went into that bag) and reconfirmed: even today it still would not function in a Canon digital camera but it would still function in a PC.

  • I have just low level formatted it in my PC, stuck it into a Canon dSLR and the dSLR said it needed to be formatted in camera, but then it also said the CF could not be formatted by the camera.

A primary investigation proving that a CF can be bricked for photographic purposes in camera, but still function useably for general digital data storage -- including transfers/viewing of JPG files but not in a camera!
