Evening All

Well its a good couple of years since I posted on here. My photography has wained a little since working for myself, and dare I say it, I use my Fuji XT1 more than more Canon gear at the minute, sorry.

We are going to Iceland at the end of March for a landscape\waterfall-fest, with hopefully the bonus of seeing the northern lights and having a go at some astrophotography.

I know this may not go down well but my XT1 is my go-to camera at the minute because of the weight and size benefits but its high ISO capabilities are a little lacking shall we say. So I have the choice of taking my 5D Classic, which my example is 10 years old OR my 1 year old 7D Mark 2. Which do I take as a second camera for doing astrophotography? The 5DC because its full frame or the 7D2 with maybe better high ISO capabilities? I will only be taking a Sigma Fisheye F2.8 lens as its the fastest Canon lens I have. For my Fuji, I am taking a Rokinon 14mm F2.0, which apparently is the lens of choice for astrophotography beginners.

Your advices would be greatly appreciated but I dropped the "F" bomb so understand if you feel the need to abuse me ;-)a

Cheers

Julian

Why not 5D3?

Astrophotgraphy usually requires ISO in the thousands, the 7D2 is great at high ISO, the 5Dc isn't, but the 7D2 is a crop sensor, so 14mm would be equiv ~22.5mm which isn't quite as wide.

Take them both out tonight and test them out.

I don't have the 5d3 anymore, whilst it was an awesome bit of kit, it was just too heavy and bulky, which was an issue for me at the time.

I would have loved to have got out last night to test but we were in the midst of Storm Doris -?

I'm with DesolateMirror, think 7d crop with fisheye would lose some FOV. What focal length is the sigma?

2x 50d: with 17-85mm f4-5.6, 100mm Macro USM, 50mm f1.8, 2x Sigma 30mm f1.4, 55-250mm (kit lens), Canon 100-400mm L, Tamron 200-400mm f5.6, Samyang 8mm. 480mm refactor with HEQ5. Home made beamsplitter stereo rig.

Heya,

I have a bias for the 5Dc, it's just such a lovely looking file it renders.

But, if you want to do a lot of vistas, waterfalls, etc, you're going to want the best dynamic range you can get, and the 7D2 is probably the one to take. Expose for highlights to avoid clipping data and you can recover shadows from the newer tech and retain color/contrast a little better. It's a very good sensor. You can do the same with the 5Dc honestly, but the recovered shadow areas will be much muddier and grey/brown by comparison.

Test it out sometime, go somewhere and do a shoot with both cameras, purposefully expose only highlights and leave the foreground in shadow and recover it in post normally, see which camera holds up shadow recovery better. That's the camera to take. You will be presented with very high dynamic range opportunities on this trip where it goes from bright white to dark shadow in one composition really fast.

Very best,

I'd go for the 7D2 over the classic, for better high ISO performance, and the astro photography. ... and the flexibility in cropping mpix.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

Good god, NO! The 7D2 has more than a half stop MORE dynamic range than the old 5D, not to mention a sensor that has 59% quantum efficiency compared to the pathetic 26% for the 5D

Take the 7D2, take it every day of the week and twice on Sunday compared to the now lousy 5D. There is absolutely no comparison between the 7D2 and the 5D anymore, the 7D2 trumps the 5D is pretty much every metric important for photography and especially astrophotography. And don't worry about the crop sensor aspect, it's a wildly over played stigma that full frame is better for astro, including wide angle/widefield nightscape type shots. The 7D2 with a Rokinon 16mm f2 lens would be a fantastic setup for any kind of landscape and nightscape photography.

That's where the 6D comes into its own :-)
fullframe with less weight

I would also say 7d2. I mean I love 5D classic but given it is really now more than 10+ year old camera, 7d2 will top almost every spec except the sensor size.
