I took this at a street markets recently and I'm having trouble with composition. With rule of thirds, the dog seems to be in the wrong position, but moving him over brings in the edge of the mat. Is cropping an option or is it better to just leave it? Any C&C welcome, be at brutal as you like.

One of the things that can step outside the Rule of Thirds is a Single Subject, where the is no complementary or antagonistic element in the composition.

I found that there was too much vacant space in the photo, especially at the bottom so I cropped there, as well as on the right. I also rotated it about 10 counterclockwise because the dog looked off balance. I was a subjective call, another person might say the opposite. It is a shame that you cut off the dogs hindquarters. Also, I wish the leash was not there.

The shot now looks better to me. I admit that this is an "eyeballing it" type of subjective call, as opposed to applying compositional rules.

Don't know if it is better, but at least is it a fresh viewpoint.

Hmm. Definitely an improvement. The excessive carpet is so bright, it's a bit distracting.

Hmm. I like that too. I never noticed it before.

Well, I did get the "full dog" in the original, but just behind him, the rug ended and there was an ugly umbrella pole:(. The leash I can PS out I suppose.

would b&w ruin this picture, because of the distracting carpet? Or would it help?

I think that radtech's crop puts that one great big puppy eye right on to a rule of thirds sweet spot.

Hmm. There's something not right with the fur. I'm not sure B&W works?

I would have positioned the dog to the left of the photo as his head focuses toward the right. I like the shot though.
