Hi,

I will be heading to the Grand Teton/YellowStone/Glacier National in late July. I need some insight how much memory storage do I need. Do you shoot raw or jpeg or both?

thanks,

The question is, do YOU shoot raw or jpeg or both? Is YOUR camera 5 megs or 24 megs or something in between? Are YOU shooting just scenery or just wildlife or both? Anyway figure on several hundred to over a thousand images per day depending on YOUR preferences. Memory cards are relatively cheap or bring along a laptop and external drive and transfer each days pics to them or the cloud. If this is going to be YOUR only trip to the parks don't short your self on pic memory.

I can't say what you'll need because I lack the pertinent information, but I can tell you what I use.
When I go for two weeks, I usually wind up taking between 5-7,000 photos, RAW+JPEGs. That uses up between 120-180GBs.

I shoot RAW exclusively and since I own a laptop I take it with me as I travel and download to it each night.

When I'm in Yellowstone or the Tetons I keep an average of around 300 images a day. So if you have the same shooting habits I do, just multiply 300 times the number of days you'll be there by the size of your image files........that will give you an approximate idea of how much data your cards will need to hold.

I agree with the others - you have not given us any of the info that we would need to recommend a card size based on the way you shoot and the file sizes that you produce. .You haven't even said how long your trip will be. .It's kind of like asking, "How much food should I take on my camping trip?" . . . . . unless we know how long your camping trip is, what size portions you like to eat, and how many meals a day you eat, there is really no way we can possibly make an accurate recommendation.

Sorry, I should have stated that I will be bringing 5dmk3 with me and staying for 13 days. Currently, I have 2 x 32gb and 1 x 16gb SD. I will be shooting the wildlife and scenery.

You're going to need more cards unless you have a laptop with you and back up and erase every day.

Are the 32 gig cards CF or SD?

Ive had a couple of cards fail on me so I'm a bit paranoid, I would also bring an external B/U drive like 1TB for less than $100 its good piece of mind if something were to ever happen to the laptop.

What is a B/U drive? .I googled the term, and didn't come up with anything relevant. .This causes me to this that "B/U drive" is probably not a term that most people are familiar with, so I thought it would be helpful if you could explain what it is that you are talking about.

Thank you

This is what i do, and i take a small (in size ) portable hard drive 500 gb. Memory cards are are fairly cheap compared to other gear. I would take a couple more than i thought i needed. Its easier and probably cheeper to get before trip, than to try to find one while traveling and realize u need more :-)
